Change live folder icons and all other folder icons in Win10 Pro

I've been tinkering with the look of my whole system recently. I didn't like the default theme or the folder icons. Now with the help of SevenForums article How to change default folder icons: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...lder-icon.html. It was a very handy article that got me quite far and the same principles applied to Win10 as it did on 7

I've been able to change only a few of the default folders. Now as I'm fairly average at tinkering I've done what the article said on my 10 machine with some success as shown below:

Change live folder icons and all other folder icons in Win10 Pro-2016-07-18.png

However the live folders do not update despite editing both the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons AND the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons Registry locations. This met with the above result after a restart. Below you can see what I did to the registry:

Change live folder icons and all other folder icons in Win10 Pro-2016-07-18-2-.png

As you can see from the registry paths I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full). But 5, 6 and 162 have not updated at all.

So Am I missing something or is there no way to alter these types of folders? Including but not limited to such as the Fonts folder icon, live folders, full folders or folders containing data of one form or another for example:

Change live folder icons and all other folder icons in Win10 Pro-2016-07-18-3-.png

Any thoughts, help or suggestions would be appreciated, and if this article happens to already exist somewhere I do apologise for cluttering the forum up here as I've not been able to find anything specific so far.

    Thanks,
    Pirate

if I'm not wrong , live folders get the custom icon when you set in folder options to not display thumbnails but icons only .
Since your folders have any content , then your custom defaut icon for folder won't display correctly .

It's just the downside of this hack

Solved: How to fix Live Folder not dislplaying properly

I had a problem which is well known to those of us who like to use Custom Folders Icons. I like to Icon Packager but when changing the folder icons I would have some with the new folder and some with old folders. I tried rebuilding Icon cache index, editing the registry to no avail.

But I have Found the Solution!!!
You can download software names Filetypesman 64bit which you can find by using this provided link...

in this program you will see all the File Types search for the file type "Folder" once you do, right click the target and select "Edit Selected File Type" and then you will see Default Icon, click the [...] button and go to the desired icon and then click OK and OK again until you are back to the main window and BOOM! your good to go! Let me know if this works for you.

    Good Luck fellow Customizers

How to fix Live Folder not dislplaying properly

Partially worked. For the most part folders are now in the style I want however... Live folders still aren't updated.

The icons for the, what you call “live folders”, are controlled by the hidden desktop.ini file that resides in them. You can edit this file, or delete it to stop it from overriding your preference.

As for the folders showing thumbnails, I have no suggestion other than to turn thumbnails off.

Hi there, this is my first post..

I just wanted to let you know that you can get the custom icons for the “live folders” and set folder options to display thumbnails too.

I followed the same SevenForums article that you posted above, but after changing the 3, 4 and 5, 6, 162 icons with Resource Hacker I wasn't able to replace the "imageres.dll" even with the Take Ownership command, and the System File Replacer will not change "imageres.dll" even if it says so.

so I tried manually changing the icons in the Registry Editor, still no luck! 'that was much easier in Win 7'

Finally, I decided to quit and selected always show icons option to get the custom icons working..
I guess I was just lucky because I decided to do a disk clean up, I selected the clean previous windows update option and received a message saying that I will loose the 'restore option' or something, I clicked continue, disk cleaning finished after an hour or so, I shut down and when I started windows again I selected the show thumbnails again just to check and a pleasant surprise was waiting for me! they all changed to custom icons now! even the “live folders” no more yellow folders.

I'm assuming 'and I could be wrong' that the disk clean up removed whatever was stopping the new icons from appearing correctly.. just thought you might want to know that.

    cheers
