How Many User-Created Themes Can Be Saved in Windows 10?

Hello to everyone. This is my first post here.

I love changing my desktop to suit my mood, the weather, my dreams of going back to white sand and blue water, the little ones in my life, my pets, you name it. I currently have 345 themes saved and Windows isn't cooperating in letting me save any more.

Is there a registry fix - or anything else - that will allow me to save more?

    TIA

Hi, just wondering if you really need so many themes - or are you just changing the wallpaper (picture)? For example, do you have different sounds or mouse pointers for each theme?

If you get a particular message displayed when trying to save a further theme, could you please provide a screen shot or post it? Thanks.

Hi Dalchina and thanks for responding. I really do need all those themes. Some of them I downloaded when I was using '95, '98 and XP. Others I created myself with icons and cursers I got from the old Theme Doctor website. Then, of course, there are always new wallpapers I've found online and used to create themes. They are all priceless to me. And, yes, I have sounds, icons, and cursors for every one of them.

The only problem is the seeming inability to save more than the 345 I currently have saved. I don't get an error message. It just takes me to High Contrast Themes with "Basic" highlighted. There is no option to right-click and save the new theme.

I doubt there is a specific limit on the number of themes that can be created. Most likely you are hitting some other limit, possibly the desktop heap. Note that this is just a guess, something that I know very little about and have never seen such a problem.

You lost me on "desktop heap." Whatever is that, please?

I'm hoping there's just a numerical value somewhere in the registry that will let me up the number of saved themes.

Can you actually apply any of the themes used for older Windows editions? If not, I'm just wondering how useful they are...

As LMiller7 said, no idea why you'd hit a limit.. and I'd be rather surprised if anyone here can give a specific answer on this, or know what's happening, which sounds obscure, I'm afraid.

Have a look at your event log (Event Viewer) and see if there's a report related to the failure to save a theme.

desktop heap - try a search engine...

Not many of the old .exe files work. I saved my themes folder through each iteration of Windows. Now I open one of the files and manually set up the sounds, cursors, icons and wallpaper in Windows 10 Settings.

I was fiddling around yesterday and disovered that I could click on one of those 345 themes, change the wallpaper and a few other tweaks, and lo and behold! theme 346 appeared there, waiting to be saved.

    Go figure.

I'm a senior (67) and a former geek. I was an Administrator at Pro-Networks for several years back in the XP days. I do know my way around a Windows platform, though my geek creds have lessened over the years.

Thanks for your help. As you said, this issue was rather obscure

About that desktop heap... I googled it and I have to say I have never experienced it. Not once since I hopped on a Windows 3.1 computer.
