Couldn't I make a system restore point instead? I don't have enough room for another system image on my external HD.

Thanks for the links and list of things to look for! I will get back to you on how this works out.
You're welcome. Just remember it's like with ALL software-"Think before you click". Also if you run into problems installing a visual style just post here I'm subscribed and maybe can help. If you haven't done it before it can seem daunting. Moving dll's placing theme folders to Windows/Resources/themes...etc.
Also as a side note: when you use Windows update after installing a theme, if it isn't just for defender and will require a reboot, change to a windows default theme before rebooting... some updates especially those for Internet Explorer can cause a black screen(not good) because of the changes to winsxs and dll's. You can reactivate the theme after. Also Visual Styles use something called
UXstyle that patches the system, and if you run sfc /scannow(system file checker) it will reset the patches, so you will just have to run Uxstyle again to re activate your theme. ok?

I've run the patcher before. I've move dlls and stuff for themes before. That's how I had the first Windows XP theme.

Yeah, the last time I tried the Windows XP theme install I was stuck at the blank logon screen. I hard reset multiple times trying to boot into recovery tools. Good thing I know my password, the run keys, the restart command, and a Windows 8.1 CD for $30 off of Amazon.

Not good enough(rarely works anyhow). If something major happens a system image is the best way to go. Really one should make one every month or before and after major system changes. It's the second most important thing after your Anti Virus.

Good morning d2123cross. Did your PC finish it's hiccup and get back up and running?
One other thing I forgot to mention last night the theme patcher "UxStyle" has been updated to work on windows 10, so you may need to go to the UXStyle site to download the one for 10 or click here

Yeah, it stopped responding so I killed it. Then I restored my computer. After that, I restored the Default theme engine and patched it again. Now my computer has a black screen when it boots into Windows. I am using the current version of the patcher. What should I do?

If you look at my specs for Windows 10 you'll see that my laptop is pretty weak handeling graphics with windows(Linux works great even 3D) and I had a lot of problems theming it with Win7, so I had given up on theming it when in windows. But just for S&G(s%&ts & giggles) I tried it with 10 and it worked except for some ghosting(because of transparency) after closing a window. You could try using a built in windows theme when booting(change before shutting down of course) and rebooting. Also here is an excerpt from what came with the Win8 theme I'm using on 10:
After running Windows Update (especially if there are Internet Explorer protection patches - they usually change uxtheme files),
please load the standard "Windows" theme (aero.theme) before restarting the system to avoid black screen at boot.
After the boot, you can chose Abisso2014 or other modded themes.
Also maybe trying another theme made for Win8, it could be that the theme you're using makes too many conflicting changes with the system and doesn't follow the Windows API's.

OK then. I haven't done any updates for Ie or anything else since upgrading from Win 7. I'll try another theme for Win 8/.1 and get back to you. I did apply the Windows Technical Preview theme before the restart and this happened. What do you think this might be?
