If you use only a few colors then you can optimize the file-size by saving the cursor in 8-bit instead of 32-bit color.
That way you get that classic-old touch entirely, not just by the looks but also in the making.
Unless you get an issue with transparency and edges, otherwise it should work fine with this classic-alternate models.

I tried 8-bit once but it resulted in unsightly dithering in most cases. It limits the choice of colours too much. Either way, performance is mostly irrelevant with cursors. I use .png files for wallpapers to circumvent Windows's aggressive compression, many of them are close to 10 Mb. What are these cursors compared to those?Nice work! @i486

I used 8-bit a few times with RW Cursor Editor, the outcome was OK but some colors do get altered.
Though no dithering since it was a classic pointer, I believe one of the 'binary' releases in your copper/orange variation was nicely converted when I tried it.
Yeah, that wallpaper thing is weird. I also use png.
Cursors get loaded fully to memory, if I may guess, graphical memory.
Size is of no importance nowadays, but for virtual machines, if you use cursors there, smaller cursor sizes may make a difference in some cases. Though I'm able to test all our cursors in a VM as well.
There is however a limit of the animated cursor format or in the way Windows uses it.
For instance if one .ani file exceeds 2 mb and something, there is no preview and the file is not usable.
I've ran into this when adding 128x128 layer of animation. But this is not an issue atm. Smaller cursors work fine.

I use VirtualBox to test out cursors in virtual machines. Custom cursors works on any version of Windows such as Windows 95 all the way up to Windows 11. I also tried to make 8-bit cursors and they look jagged. However, you can make a jagged cursor set just for fun. You do not have to make it, but this is just a suggestion describing that it is possible to create jagged cursor sets.
Please go to the new thread on the ElevenForums and upload any cursor set that you want to make for Windows 11. Please bare in mind that Windows 11 is not finished yet, so it is still in the works. Microsoft will release Windows 11 early next year, but the later Windows 11 is released, the better this new operating system shall be.
When Windows 11 is officially released, we shall see if this new version of Windows includes new cursor roles. In the meantime, be as creative as you can. Enjoy my new Custom Cursors forum on the ElevenForums.com site.
I have used the leaked build of Windows 11 which was the very first build to be released and it is very fast on a 4GB virtual machine in VirtualBox. Right now, my Windows 11 installation no longer boots up to a blue screen of death and unrepairable damage to the operating system.
You have to keep the design between the straight and diagonal lines.
Like the classic ones in Windows and ones that i486 released recently, they all have 45 degrees angles or straight lines.
These have to be as sharp as possible on screen so you need to avoid anti-aliasing or smoothing due to resizes.
A pixelated look is revealed when you zoom...
