    Custom File Icons?

I've got a program that creates various file types; some of these are associated with the program and display its icon. Is it possible to keep the file association, but change the icons for some of the associated types so they stand out in a listing?

If so, then ideally I'd like to extract the icon from the exe, make three slightly different versions, and make these display (at all scales) for the three main file types. Any suggestions for tools to do this? I have Photoshop CS5.

Photoshop does not work with .ICO file.
    Basically you will need:
    1. IcoFX Portable | PortableApps.com to extract the icon from the executable and modify it.
    2. Resource Hacker to replace the icon in the executable

Thanks for the reply, but do I need to replace the icon in the exe? I was hoping I could just save the icon files in the same folder.

]Edit] Just found these, which seem to show it is possible:

    Hey nigelmercier-

I'm not sure that I completely understand your question. Are you wondering if you can change the icon to certain folders, which may or may not have already been customized by their respective programs that are within it? If so, yes you can, but I wanted to make sure i understand your question before I type it all out.

No, it is the file type icons I want to change. The program uses its icon for certain files, I want to expand on that in the same way that Word has different icons for different types of Word files (templates, documents, macro enabled documents etc have slightly different icons)

Yeah, what I was going to suggest won't work for that. Sorry.
