It's not a fix exactly but a method I personally use to have alternative icon background colours is to use TileIconifier. It's not the first time I've suggested using it and it won't be the last. You can pick an image file or ico file to replace icons on the start menu as well as change background colour of tiles to be whichever colour you want from a palette/code, and can choose transparency. Do note it won't work on all Start Menu'd shortcuts such as apps from the Microsoft Store, however.

Like I said, not really a fix for the issue but maybe thought it would also help changing said background issue.

Hi, yes I read about it, it's an open source app right? You say it won't work for Windows Store apps, will it work for system apps like cmd? Also, does Tilelconifier mess with the current custom theme/registry? And should it not work, will uninstalling it restore the original WIndows settings? I have not tried it yet because first I'm trying to find a fix by tweaking Windows without having to resort to 3rd party tools, but if testing it is risk free I'll go for it
I just checked the app site and does not seem to have any updates since 2021, I wonder if it's still compatible with all the changes Windows 10 had since then

Absolutely nothing wrong with being cautious, I like it. The changes are only made to pinned icons on the start menu. For example, if you notice in the box to the left above the LNK path with all the shortcuts, you will see the original icons next to their names. I've been using it for years and had no issue with it, even during and beyond all the Windows updates. I'm currently on the latest updates, just neglected to update my specs on this forum is all.

As a test, even pinned cmd.exe to the start menu and changed it's icon to a CD image, like so...

Undoing changes to the icon is as simple as hitting the "remove iconify" button.

EDIT: Silly me forgot to mention the thing with background colour. By using the default option in the background colour box of TileIconify, it will show the default grey box. If you copy and paste the colour code of your start menu (in my case it's #1f1f1f) and use that code in the background colour box, it will match fill the transparent background of the icon used with that colour, which results in no grey box.

EDIT 2: By double clicking either the medium or small icon preview boxes, it'll pop up with the option of using a default icon for cmd there. Only issue with this is it's not the exact same, as the C: of the original icon isn't noticeable but it is similar. If you use that one, you can resize and zoom in/out however much you wish to match it up as much as possible. If not that, you can always find a copy of the original icon file for cmd.exe, and use that instead.

Again again, not exactly the solution you're after so apologies if I'm wasting time with this.

Thanks, I'm not too fond of changing the original Windows GUI with 3rd party tools, but will give it a try later and post results
