For those interested, I was trying to do the same thing and I was able to come up with a solution. Basically I just edited the icon file located on "C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun" with Resource Hacker, replaced the ugly pin icon with a transparent one and then replaced my edited file with the windows one. Note that you'll have to disable permissions and take ownership of the folder, because windows, by default doesn't allow you to edit windows files.
