Commands to toggle small/large taskbar icons?

    Hey everyone,

This is kind of a customization question, as it seems like something relatively few people would do... And anyway, you guys seem to know the most about obscure Windows tweaks—so I hope you don't mind my asking in this section. 😏

I alternate between my laptop's built-in display and two large hi-res displays. Each time, I must open Taskbar Settings and turn "Use small taskbar icons" on or off. If I don't, there either isn't room for everything (and a scrollbar appears with one or two icons next to it—LOL), or the icons are so small I can hardly see 'em.

Is there a way to turn Small Taskbar Icons on and off from the command line? If so, I could make desktop shortcuts for it, which would be much quicker. I've found commands for doing other obscure stuff (e.g. turning my WiFi adapter on/off), so I thought this might be possible too. Thanks!

Hi, there may be some rundll32 or similar command for each of those... you can research that.
    I can't see one here:

Meanwhile here's something I knocked up with Autohotkey - simply run the exe file in the zip attached.

It simply does what you do manually in Settings, so Settings appears briefly.

Run this once to make them small- run again to make them large.

No need to restart f explorer.

    These may also work:
    Use_large_taskbar_buttons.bat
    Use_small_taskbar_buttons.bat
    Tutorial:
Use Large or Small Taskbar Buttons in Windows 10

The bat files change the icon size value in the Registry and restart Explorer to effect the change.

    Thanks for your help.

I knew about the registry setting, but assumed it was just so Windows could restore the icon state on sign-in. Changing the setting and reloading the whole registry seems Rube Goldberg-ish—but if it works, it works! 😄

And did you actually consider or try my suggestion? Seems no reply, thanks.

Yes, thanks for your idea, I do appreciate it. However, while I'm familiar with AutoHotKey, I prefer not install and use it just for this one purpose.

I also hope you understand that I meant my reply as a thank you to EVERYONE who offered their help here. I'm sorry I didn't acknowledge you individually—but that was no reason to PM me threatening to "unfriend" me, or whatever. Hope you don't overreact to everything that way... You might get pretty lonely! 😐

Hmm... It seems this Dalchina guy (or gal) has blocked all my messages, for seemingly not being grateful enough for his suggestion. (Actually, I just have many obligations these days and can't check in here very often.)

So if any of you want to send DC a note, explaining I was totally unaware I was seeming offensive, feel free to do so. Computer peeps can be on the sensitive side (I'm one myself), but they're usually decent enough, and I hate to send one off into the ether unintentionally. 😉
