Apparently, this is the conventional method for the task

How to show Build and Version on Windows 11/10 Desktop

but it doesn't generate the correct version

Display Windows 10 Version on Desktop-version.png

my actual version is "Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 19044.1865 (21H2"

Is there another way to do this?

i didnt change anything but run dxdiag. and mine is 19044 but at the bottom of the box shows 19041 so my guess is 19044 is built on 19041.
probably the same principle as win 95 is win NT and all windows is windows NT.

but i like the paint idea ill use that.

How to show Build and Version on Windows 11/10 Desktop

To do so, open regedit and navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion
Double click on PaintDesktopVersion on the right side, and in the box that appears, change the value from 0 to 1.
    weird ,mine doesn't show \PaintDesktopVersion

No, not quite the same principle.

Windows 95/98 was actually that last DOS based Windows. Windows NT was a parallel, but quite different OS. Then Windows 2000 came out with a desktop that looked just like '95, but running on an NT-based OS. Then that was replaced by XP and since then all subsequent versions of Windows are a development of NT.

The 19041/42/43/44 builds (2004/20H2/21H1/21H2) are fundamentally all running on the same 19041 system files. When 2004 was released it installed as a conventional major feature update, all 1909 system files were replaced with a full download of the new OS and the old ones were saved to a Windows.old folder so that you could return to the old OS within a 10 day window.

The upgrade from 2004 to the later versions is quite different. No longer are the whole OS system files replaced, instead the updates have already been delivered through the previous Cumulative update(s). But they lie dormant until turned on by an Enablement Package. This is a small package that downloads and installs like a CU, no Windows .old folder is created. To signify that this is a minor feature update by enablement package the main build number is only increased by 1. All versions up to 19044 (soon to be 19045 when 22H2 is released) share a common set of system files with 19041.

    Microsoft said:
Windows 10, versions 2004 and 20H2 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 20H2 are included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 2004 (released October 13, 2020), but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that activates the Windows 10, version 20H2 features.

I used to use the PaintDesktop tweak when running Win10 Pro, Win10 Home and Win10 Insider Preview Dev to readily distinguish which machine I was on but it's no longer needed as I'm running only Pro now. WinKey + R and type winver is quick and I keep a shortcut to winver.exe in Windows\System32 on the Desktop.
