change/remove dropbox sync icons from explorer

hopefully it's possible SOMEHOW... the only option i've figured out myself is just closing dropbox which defeats the purpose i think.

these things are annoying and ugly. is there a way to hide them, through regedit/winaero tweaker/etc? in a way they won't return, preferably, but i don't mind a temporary solution lol.

    thanks in advance.

If you're using dropbox sync, well, that's what they are there for of course.

It looks as though more control is available with a paid plan:

yeah i'm using a paid plan, online-only, so the icons only show in folders i'm syncing to dropbox. no option to hide the icons though. it's entirely for aesthetics, so i doubt they'd have a feature readily available for that lol.

These are actually small transparent overlays that get pasted on top of the normal icons.

    They are stored here:

    Code:
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
change/remove dropbox sync icons from explorer-onedriveshelloverlayids.jpg

Depending on how adventurous you feel, you can delete them and either reboot or recycle the 'explorer.exe' process.

Needless to say have good backups ready.

However there's a good chance they will return every month with regular updates to OneDrive.

Also worth mentioning about these 'ShellIconOverlayIdentifier' Registry entries is there are only 11 overlay slots*** that Windows will allow to be used, starting at the top in sorted order. So what this means is other programs will 'fight' with each other for these slots by adding blanks to their own Key Name.

As you can see above, OneDrive stole the top 7 slots away from Dropbox by adding an extra blank, such that some of Dropbox's overlays are now missing. This can often go back and forth with the added blanks.

*** There's 15, but there's 4 system reserved overlays not policed by the sort order.

So it's possible if you have enough other overlays, you could add blanks in front of their Keys Names to promote them while demoting the OneDrive Overlays so they're beyond reach. However there's still a good chance OneDrive will out 'blank' them, but not always.

My problem has been figuring out a way for my most important Dropbox overlays to co-exist along with OneDrive's 7. I did this by promoting one to the top, "DropboxExt05'. So far this has stopped the 'war' even after each get's regular updates.
