How Can I Export my ClearType Values, for Later Restoring?

    Hi all

I tried Adjusting ClearType several times in the past,
and each time I felt it did not go well.

Today, I tried again, and finally achieved a result that I can look at.

I would like to export the values that were achieved,
so when I re-format this Laptop, I can restore exactly the current ClearType values,
and not have to Try many times again..

Does anyone know where ClearType stores its values?

    Thank you

The only two keys in the registry I could find that seem to contain what look like valid entries are:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics\DISPLAY1
    and
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2075118420-70468403-4121793517-1001\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics\DISPLAY1
    At least on my system.
A simple test would be to alter one setting for Clear Type that you can easily change back to see if one of the values at these keys changes, then goes back when you undo the change.
If these are the keys you can just export them to a .reg file to be merged on a new install.

Did you find it out? I tinkered with the wizard, and didnt like the result, I then changed it back to what someone said is the defaults, but it doesnt look right, text against a white background like on this site now looks skinny and hard to read, but if I redo the wizard and pick options that look darker text then looks fuzzy so that doesnt work either.

I have a copy of my old registry but cant find the settings.

I'd say run cttune and turn it off. Then reboot. That's a guess.

Undo what you did or use a system restore point or restore your backup image of windows.

This seems to confirm my post above this one.

EDIT: Also in that thread it's suggested:

    1) type Win+R

    2) type shell:fonts

    3) choose font settings

    4) reset to default

    5) reset your MONITOR to factory settings also !

    That should work.

Problem is that resets everything related to fonts not just cleartype strength.

Not sure why my monitor would have any bearing on a OS adjustment and then I would have a problem of how to restore my monitor settings.

It seems I guess I need to restore a backup of the OS.

    I find these:

Monitor settings can make font (text) look washed out.

Well, given I havent changed my monitor settings its not that, it was windows tinkering so the problem is windows.

The good news is I fixed it now, restored the backup.

If you meant monitor settings inside windows, than I think I misunderstood you, I thought you meant on the monitor itself. Your text in your screenshot is the exact opposite of how mine was, it turned into a very skinny font, and I also think it wasnt even black it had turned into a dark grey colour so suffered from lack of contrast and lack of volume. If I went into cleartype wizard and for giggles selected the darkest box (even though if it didnt look right), the text would kind of look ok, but could tell was not right as it was washed out and bold text would look ridiculous.

Curious what part of the UI controls those settings in your screenshot? Are those what I was looking for controlled by the wizard. O_o On my system, its not populated at all (after the restore) and isnt on any other systems either.

I made some changes but I'm not the person to guide you if you want to make the same changes. If I screw up my font settings it typically takes around an hour of messing about to fix things.

Anyway I changed system font to SegoeUI Bold using Winaero Tweaker. Note: If changing system font you can get undesirable results. See the warning here:

Change Default System Font in Windows 10

I used the old Classic Advanced Windows Color and Appearance Dialog Box for other changes.

    See:

Changing the Color of the Context Menu & it's Font

The problem with that is that you have to go through each and every setting then save. It's a pain but do-able.
