    Where can I find taskbar jumplist icons fin the registry?

    So I reaaaaally want to enable jumplists & recent items. Unfortunately due to the current proclivities of my pc, my OCD forbids it.

    Notepad++ and the .txt extension show the proper icon when accessed from my third party start menu.

    However when I use the taskbar/jumplist it shows the default icon and not the proper n++ one

    any ideas where this is tucked away at so I can change whatever is inhibiting it from using the icon of the program assigned to open them?

    As a start, have you looked at this? . . .

    > How to Turn On or Off 'Recent Items' and 'Frequent Places' in Jump Lists in Windows 10

    I hope this helps.

    I would imagine this is to do with how Notepad++ is associated with file types.

    People have long struggled to properly associate Notepad++ with file types- there are several such threads on tenforums.

    Example discussion:
    windows 10 - How can I make Notepad++ default program for `.txt` files? - Super User

    What happens if you click the .txt files you highlighted? Do they open in Notepad++ ?
    Are you using the installed version or a portable version?

    Do you see the same for other file types it can open?

    Comparison: I have Docpad configured as my Notepad replacement. The correct icons are shown in its jump list.

    Hi Dalchina,

    I use the portable version and yes it opens .txt in notepad++. As for the other filetypes (ex: xml) that DOES show the proper notepad++ icon in the jumplists.

    To test I grabbed notepad++ on a VM of windows 10 and all was well. So i assume its something somewhere in the registry thats not behaving for whatever reason, just need to find out what/where.

    Ok, then I assume you have associated the portable version with txt.

    Try
    Reset and Clear Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10

    This includes info as to where these are stored, and includes jump lists.

    Sorry, anything else would be guesswork as I don't use the program. It's going to be related to establishing the default program fully, given it's portable. There is also an installable version.

    Returning to my earlier question: what actually happens when you click one of those top two?

    You could try using various methods to establish the program as default, and try switching defaults and see the effect.

    Which other file types are handled by Notepad++ - do you see the same problem with their icons?

    With my portable Notepad++, after I have started Notepad++ once as administrator in order to set the association for the file extensions I want for Notepad++, then the icon file setting in particular gets set at these locations in the Registry:

    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Notepad++_file\DefaultIcon
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Notepad++_file\DefaultIcon

    and then the jumplist shows that icon for the related files over the Notepad++ taskbar item.

    The method is as described in dalchina's reply #4. (In particular, reply no. 33 in that link).Where can I find taskbar jumplist icons fin the registry?-notepad-jump.png

    (ps: For testing, I set the associations for .txt .log and .xml. Thereafter, double-clicking .txt or .log files still opened with the Windows Notepad, but using the "Open with" > "Choose another app > and then selecting Notepad++ with "Always use this app for .txt/.log files" allowed double-clicking those files to open straight away with Notepad++ .)

    You did ask me these questions in your previous reply and I did answer, perhaps I wasnt clear though. The way things sound out in your head as you type them often dont translate to being read quite right lol.

    the "top two" that display with the wrong icon, still open in/with notepad++ by default

    I included a .xml in there as its also handled by notepad++ and displays the proper icon. I can try a few more filetypes to reinforce what im seeing real quick. Yea .cfg, .log, .json all show the n++ icon as well.

    some dissociation from the icon side of things wherever its handled in the registry. I did try to re-associate through the windows > settings > apps > default by filetype > .txt but it changed nada.

    Thanks for those locations, i'm going to check them and load up a VM with n++ to use for comparisons sake. I'm not optimistic however as those locations sound like they apply across the board and my icons are working across the board when i associate something with n++. Just not for .txt for some absurd reason.

    putting some hours into it is on todays to-do list after i finish work in a few hours so i'll report back.
