    Note that with reference to txt files, the Notepad++_file in the aforementioned locations in turn gets referred to this location also (If you haven't already you can use RegScanner from NirSoft (
    RegScanner: Alternative to RegEdit find/search/scan of Windows ) to search for Notepad++ and view other relationships.

    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt
    (Default) REG_SZ Notepad++_file

    Just at a glance, this may be the hangup. I dont know why setting it as the default repeatedly isnt updating here, but it appears under

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt
    (Default) = txtfile

    Will change it to Notepad++_file and hope for the best :P

    bah. seemingly deadend. I used filetypesman to compare the .txt entry between a fresh VM (where its working) and my main PC (where its not) and theyre identical.

    even moreso I checked the key you noted above on the VM where it does display the proper icon and the value for the default string is txtfile as well. No idea why the discrepancy on yours but im off to dig deeper.

    well, i've made a bit of progress. sort of. still working on pinning it down exactly, but oddly enough it appears to have something to do with something set in a regfile which ive been building/adding to for quite some time to incorporate n++ completely on new installs etc as when i disable it/revert to defaults the behavior as far as that icon resolves.

    this of course introduces all kinds of other problems like regfiles asking me where to edit them instead of editing automatically in n++ etc.

    So i need to find out which reg-change in particular is affecting the icon exactly and work around that.

    progress though i suppose.

    got it. weiiiird. without a bunch of trial and error i never woulda pegged this as the issue.

    seems this key needs to look like this

    not this

    why pointing to notepad and not notepad++ fixes it, got me but it does.
