Know how to get useless stuff out of Open With menus?

My frequently used Open With context menus for various graphics files contain LO Draw, Paint, and Snipe & Stretch, and I can't seem to get rid of them.

In HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.png, for instance, I only find the two programs I want, and Paint and PickerHost.exe. I can delete Paint, but it's back after the next reboot. As for PickerHost.exe, I have no idea what it's doing there, and I wonder whether it's safe to delete it.

    Anybody know?

(I'm just trying to get rid of yet another annoyance.)

    Hello @Wisewiz,

Have a look at this => How to Remove Programs from "Open with" Context Menu in Windows

    I hope this helps.

I had forgotten about editing the alpha list to eliminate the Paint entry, so that might work, but I still don't know about the PickerHost.exe thing. Any help on that?

A convenient way to do this is to use this free prog.. which does more than just this:

    Select, Delete, then click Save....

It's still per extension of course.

I just noted a small bug- if I searched for jpg as an extension in the prog's search box, then the list was under a heading designated txt although what was shown was indeed for jpg.... I'd previously looked at txt, so maybe that was related.

Doesn't happen if you just browse for the extension - down a long list.

    @dalchina

Weeeell, I used your suggested program (which is verrry interesting, BTW, so I'm gonna keep 'er), but no luck. Paint is gone, but I think Paint was removable with just the additional step I mentioned above: editing the MRU list. But LO Draw and Snipper-Snak persist.

I'm thinking I may be able to eliminate the associations for some file types from within the GUI for LO Draw. I'l give that a try.

And as for the annoying S & S, I think I recall Brink saying (in one of the tutorials) that some MS apps were just not removable from some context menus.

Thank you for your help and for the new toy, dalchina.

Interesting that LO Draw persists - clearly there's more than one way Open with is configured - maybe by 'kind'.

If you read this, it might prompt another idea as to where to look.
Editing the "Open with" menu in Windows 10 - Super User

It specifically mentions Default Programs Editor, and a similar issue.

Note that Libre Office Draw is not present in the locations given in Brink's tutorial.

    Hi Dan,

Try deleting the png extension entirely from that area of the registry and then restart Explorer.exe in the task manager or reboot. The next time you right-click on that file type, it should ask you to associate to an app and then choose your preference or preferences.

You will have to repeat the process for each extension type i.e. jpg, jpeg etc.

    Hey, Michael,

That's a really interesting suggestion I never would have thought of.

Gonna make a new Restore Point and DO IT.

Count on me being back with a report.

Wellsir, the result is that the two I use are gone and the two I'm trying to eliminate are still there. "Something there is that doesn't love a wall"* my attempts to fix this annoyance.

    C'mon, we're just getting started.

Did you restart Explorer.exe or reboot?

After deleting & restarting, check the file extension association in settings to see if it has cleared.

I just tested this action and restarting Explorer.exe didn't clear the file association. Could you try a reboot after following the process and then check the file association in settings?

I'll try a few ideas a bit later and report back.
