Yep. That's why the good guys were gone. But the bad guys were still hangin'.

After deleting & restarting, check the file extension association in settings to see if it has cleared.
    Nope.

Please don't spend much time on this. It ain't worth it. It's just annoying; nothing's actually broken, Tweaker.

After the reboot, after the deletion of the key, the settings "choose an app" is no bloomin' help,

so I have to go to the images and reset the desired "always open" and "open with" associations.

And then I'm back to Square One, except that I got rid of Paint somewhere along this path. Ah well.

See link in my amended post #6 for some possibly interesting discussion- not a solution though, but goes a little deeper.

What's needed here is a deeper understanding of how items that do not appear in the locations given in Brink's tutorial appear in the Open With list.

FWIW: I have never been able to fathom or control the inclusion of items in 'open with', so now use 'send to' almost exclusively (when the direct association is unknown or unsuitable) - I can control the contents of 'send to'.

I tried searching the registry for occurrences of
    LibreOffice Draw
    sdraw.exe

but could see nothing that obviously related to the Open With menu, so in that I agree with mngerhold.

Thank you for that. I spent an hour or so reading all of the linked stuff there. As you say, no solution emerged, but I learned some useful stuff. Worthwhile.

Agreed, absolutely. There is something unbreakable about the grip applications like S & S and LO Draw have on that context menu. And, of course, if I could find the "something," I could probably find a way to break it.

Let's abandon this topic for now. I'm beginning to feel guilty about the time you generous advisers have invested in it.

    Thank you, one and all.

    You're welcome, Dan.

I poked around a bit last night and learned nothing useful. I still have an idea that I'll explore when time permits.

I've managed to bugger up my 'Open with' now, just a bit, so I might get motivated to explore this a bit more. LOL

Best of luck with getting that un-buggered. I'd hate to be responsible for a truly buggered Open With menu.

BTW, PickerHost.exe is gone from my reg key for .png now, so that mysterious entry is not the culprit (i. e., the one responsible for the evil-doers hangin' in my context menu; it's gone, and they're still there.).
