    Trimming right click NEW menu

    Hello,
Microsoft keeps placing items in my NEW dropdown list
I trimmed it some time ago and had Word - Excel - PowerPoint etc... coming back in the list
When I went to the registry I already had //ShellNew under these entries, and a second ShellNew had appeared under it all
I did not dare delete anything so I placed /// in front of the second ShellNew.... seems to have worked

I would like to know whether it's ok to delete the extras ShellNew and leave one only, I fear I'll have to do it again sooner rather than later...

On the right list is all I need - I would gladly get rid or Rich Text Format but could not find it...

    Thanks for your advice

It depends upon which computer I am using, my main Desktop has a long list where my Notebooks don't. Most of the long list has occurred when programs put themselves in it, not Windows. I just don't install as much on the Notebooks as on the Desktops. As for .rtf/Rich Text Format, it is used by many programs and sometimes gets set as the default format for word processors such as the built-in WordPad [first on its Save as list on mine], so it may be hard to remove without uninstalling WordPad.

Hi, here's a useful free program (old but good) - no longer on the 'net'.. so zip attached:

Makes it easy to add/remove New menu items.

Note too that you can create your own unique template file for a given file type (nothing to do with that program though).

Source Forge has an app for that. It's called ShellNewHandler, it needs no installation, and it lists everything you've got in New and gives you the option of deleting as you wish. Find it with this link: ShellNewHandler download | SourceForge.net

I just leave .lnk and .contact in there, and that gives me exactly and only Folder and Shortcut.

    Enjoy!

    dalchina, Wisewiz, THANK YOU !

I first used 'New' Menu Editor and finished trimming my list the easy way
I downloaded ShellNewHandler and shall test it next time I have to go over it again

    Thanks to both of you

    @icacream

Just realized that the .contact item in my screenshot above is not necessary either. If I leave just .lnk checked, I get the two-item menu I want: Folder and Shortcut.

I always wondered why this program called "Folder" ".contact." Now I know: it doesn't. Folder can't be removed from the context menu. There's no entry for that in the program window.
