This service is also used to handle files/shortcuts within the computer, not just on the network.Distributed Link Tracking Client
Lets say you move some files, it helps Windows to keep track of them. If disabled, this error can occur:
Code:Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item
I have looked at theAshampoo Winoptimizer
and here areMY Personal Comments
, which I have kept to the bare minimum.
When I initially download and installed the Software, I gotMANY
emails from them on the throw away account that I used, one of which was needed for confirmation and activation. The install went smoothly and the GUI is easy to understand and follow.
You would initially need to have a good, general, all round understanding of the way that Windows works and the implications of ANY changes that are made. The descriptions for each of the items that are available to be amended are informative, but they could do with a bit more information on the Pros & Cons as far as the expected impact associated with them.
The Software is very good [ although thought and awareness needs to be administered ] for people who doNOT
have the time to investigate every Tweak that they want to implement. I personally doNOT
like the fact that these modifications are taken away from theEnd User
[ but that applies to ANY Software to a certain extent ] and left in the hands of a piece of Software, I like to haveFULL Control
of my OS as far as I can, but that is just me.
I haveNOT
tested the impact of uninstalling the Software to see what the affects are as far as retaining the Tweaks [ Modifications ] etc!
Although this Software [ v17 ] is a FREE [ was £29.99 UKP ] give away at the moment, it normally has a quite high Purchase Price.
For the purpose of this thread, the Software doesNOT
have what I was hoping to accomplish, but was a good exercise none the less.

UPDATE:
I have been further investigatingServices
and I have learned quite a bit. It has helped me to understand better what each service [ well, on my system anyway, yours might be different ] does and exactly what system resources rely on them and it which type state.
I searched Google and looked at about30+
sites that pertained to Services that were SAFE toDisable
, and I came up with the following table. I have includedStars
at the end for each site that said they were SAFE toDisable
.
I thought that I would post the results of my findings for anyone who is following this thread and is interested.
Some of the below will be included in my first post, and some willNOT
[ Sorted by Display Name ]. Obviously these are for referenceONLY

I will over the next few days post theServices
that I will personally beDisabling
based on my research and findings [ according to my first post criteria ]. I will then post ANY adverse affects that they are possibly causing.

Paul,
I have never seen anybody conduct such a thorough survey. Well done for posting your results so far.
I hope you don't mind but would you also post any positive results that you are able to identify & quantify. I can only think of a few that are quantifiable:-
- Change in time taken for an SFC /scannow run [which would have to be no-faults-found runs to allow times to be comparable]. {Reported in both absolute & % terms}
- Change in time taken for disabling & rebuilding the search index. {Reported in both absolute & % terms}
- Change in time taken to boot up from shutdown to Desktop displayed, assuming auto-login. {Reported in both absolute & % terms}
Such sample results will help others judge whether or not to try disabling those services themselves.
Best of luck,
Denis
