    Exploring on how to change tile color in 20H2

    I ended up with identical releases of Windows 10 Pro on the desktop and Home on the laptop.

    Using Windows Club's "Windows Tile Color Changer for Windows 8.1", on the desktop, I managed to change a tile color, which showed up after a reboot. On additional attempt, I changed one more tile and then, with a few exceptions, every tile background changed to the taskbar color as in 2004.,

    So far, any attempt to repeat the same on the laptop failed, although, I rebooted twice and rebuilt the icons, just in case.

    Where in the desktop registry would I find where the changes occurred and compare to the same keys in the laptop?

    I think I mentioned this before... you need to use a Registry comparison program.

    You take a snap shot of the registry, then make w/e changes in the OS you want, then take a 2nd snapshot.
    The comparison tool will then compare both snapshots and show you what changed.

    For times like these, I use Regshot. It's free, fast, simple, basic.

    Thanks. I didn't know about this, even though I am a long time user of Sourceforge.

    I realize it's hard to remember "before" doing something, to take a snapshot, but for me at least, it became habit after a while.

    Sadly this tool is only working partially on the desktop and not at all on the laptop. However, Nirsoft has the same tool named RegistryChangeView. I created one before and one after a color change on the laptop, and saved the output in two text files, since I am more adept at text comparison tools, but it's impossible to tell what changed because i don't know the keys.

    This began with my wanting to control the tile colors in 20H2 with Windows Club' "Tile Color Changer" for Windows 8.1.

    On my desktop, I saw the color change of a single selected tile after a reboot. Then, I changed another tile to the same color and ALL tiles changed to the selected color. From there on, any time I change my color settings, the tile colors change with it, just as it was in 2004.

    Using the same app on the AMD laptop failed, and gave up until I found @rizzauliarahman's post Change color of tiles in Windows Start Menu?

    I could confirm deleting the registry works. I did it myself by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides and deleting the whole '0' folder, but before it you need to change the permissions of the folder so you have an access to do it

    However, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement is owned by the System. and \Overrides is owned by the TrustedInstaller. This must be changed to modify the contents. I assigned ownership to Administrators, and added myself with full rights.

    Here are the exported the registry keys of the successful settings.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\0]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\0\2093230218]
    "EnabledState"=dword:00000000
    "EnabledStateOptions"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\0\405124747]
    "EnabledState"=dword:00000001
    "EnabledStateOptions"=dword:00000000
    One must have a recent backup and/or a system restore point created before proceeding.

    How about TileIconifier to customize start menu tiles?

    Releases . Jonno12345/TileIconifier . GitHub

    Looks like it was updated earlier this week after a 3 year hiatus to handle the color issue of tiles in 20H2

    Thanks for the link. I use the older iconifier version to change icons of my design when the software icons are unrecognizable. But, I never tried to change the background color. The attached image shows both the universal blue backgrounds created with the color changer, and some tiles with icons I created. Icons of my design are not very creative or artistic but they indicate what they are. Like Libreoffice, and Nir, but the Vivaldi icon I just splashed a different color because I don't like the original red. All this outstanding artwork was done with Irfanview.

    Very nice. Glad I could be of some help with the suggestion.
