How to have different icons for .mp3 and .wav

    How to have different icons for .mp3 and .wav


    Even when I use FileTypesMan(ager), when I try to have different icons for .mp3 files and .wav files, starting last week they're the same for both, whether I want it or not.

    For years I was able to use an icon from quartz.dll for .mp3 (the blue speaker from Win95) and the round four-color circle from WinXP's Media Player .exe (yes, I saved the .exe just for that icon).

    Now I get a notice in FileTypesMan that the icon for .mp3 will be the same as .wav and this is a royal PITA when I'm trying to convert files!

    Is there any other way to change icons and have them be different?

    Use an application that has a fully dedicated File Associations data base...

    I don't have or use WMP but I reckon you'd have to choose or create an icon then edit wmploc.dll to insert the icon.

    %windir%\System32\wmploc.dll

    I cannot really help with that but if you try modifying then make a backup copy first.

    You may have more options with the Default Programs Editor (free).
    I've not tried what you want to change as I don't wish to change mine though.

    Well I just changed mp3 icon.

    Like I said - I do not have windows media player to test. The replacement icon should contain the correct sizes. (not just one size)

    Just tried it and it was super easy.

    EDIT: I meant easy to change the file icon as displayed in explorer. I'm not sure that Default Programs Editor would change the icon in WMP GUI.

    It doesn't. FLAC, .wav and .mp3 are all the same according to that program, even though they actually are not:

    How to have different icons for .mp3 and .wav-mp3.jpg

    However if I change the icon for one then both end up showing the same icon. I didn't try it with WMP disabled.

    So most likely Resource Hacker is the way to go but if using a custom icon you still need to create one to use with all common sizes included.
