I have no arms and legs. Help Me Set Up a RAMDisk!

    Hello, Folks,

Well, I offered a monetary reward if someone could determine the best RAMDisk software and then set it up for me. But a moderator say that it was against their policy. So, he thinks that most important reward you can get is that I will tell everyone here that you are the greatest person alive! Well, he is right! I come here often so I will sing your praises for months to come. By the end, everyone will know who you are and you are going to have the highest reputation EVER. I'm going to say things like you donated one of your kidneys to save a 8 year old girl because she couldn't find a blood match except you. People will think you are one of the Saints.

So please help me do the following:

First, solve the following questions with a bit of proof.

    1. Can you tell me and prove to me which ramdisk software is the best?
    a. OSFMountb. Primo Ramdiskc. DiskMaster Freed. Gillisoft RAMDiske. Primo RAMDiskf. SuperSpeed RAMDiskg. VSuite RAMDiskh. RAMDiskXPI. Qilling Disk Master Pofessionalj. Ultra RAMDiskk. Miray RAM Drivel. Any others...

    2. After reading any answers (if I get any at all), I'll pick a ramdisk software that the person could help install.I've tried installing a ramdisk about 3-4 times and I've screwed up on all of them. I admit I am an idiot. I bricked my computer once. And, the other times, they were very unpleasant experiences. This is what I want to do. I have about 64 gigs of RAM that I installed just for this purpose. (I was thinking of alloting 48 gigs for a RAMdisk.) I want to put the appropriate cache's on the ramdisk to make my computer go faster. That's obvious.

But I also want to install the following programs onto the ramdisk:1. Microsoft Office 2. Nuance Power PDF Advanced 3. Chrome.

Throughout the day, I completely terminate and then open these programs like a hundred times. So, they are always going into RAM and then being pulled out. Since I open and close them so many times per day, things would go so much faster if I had them stay on a RAMDisk. The biggest annoyance is Power PDF. It sometimes takes like 10 seconds to open a pdf. It would be nice if it was instantaneous.

Anyone up to the challenge!!! (Maybe I can secretly send you something via PayPay while the moderators aren't looking.)

Moderators: I was just totally kidding about that last sentence in parentheses. Funny though wasn't it?

You don't need one with 64Gb RAM.

Last free version of Softperfect Ramdisk:

Download SoftPerfect RAM Disk - MajorGeeks

You shouldn't install programs on it. You could run a few portable apps from it if it's persistent but most people use Ramdisk for privacy so contents are cleared on shutdown.

If you want to move browser cache you'd have to create the folders first:

RAM Disk - Install for Browser Cache File Storage - Windows 7 Help Forums

For everything else just change TEMP/TMP environment variables but create the folder structure on the RAMdisk first.

If using a non persistent RAMdisk you must set it to create the folders you need.

With that much memory, why not just leave the popular programs open all the time?

    @CerebralFreeze -

My friend, many people would pray for that amount of RAM in your system!

If the Windows pagefile is set so that the OS manages virtual memory, you do not need a ramdiak - in fact, it will decrease your performance.
Please purge your system of any ramdisk traces - this is most important.

There is one program (and only one) that I recommend which will keep your system in peak shape. It is called ProcessLasso and it actually works!

Here is the website - they have a free version, too - study it -

Bitsum. Real-time CPU Optimization and Automation

How Free Is Free? What is Freemium?

After removing all traces of the ramdisk, including registry entries, you might want to consider giving this a go.
Set the parameters so that ProBlance, SmartTrim and PerformaceMode are enabled. Then reboot.

Post back with your results. It may take a few open concurrent applications to realize the benefits.

You've got my curiousity piquéd! I'll give it a go.

The biggest annoyance is the program slow down with programs like my PDF editor. Most my programs open quickly but that one takes literally 10 seconds sometimes. It's usually about 3-5 seconds. I know it doesn't sound like a lot but remember when computers used to reboot in 1 minute vs 20 seconds (HD vs SSD)? Now, people can't live without an SSD. Excel is also a program that can take a really long time. I have no idea why. Some people have excel workbooks that have like a 100-200 worksheets but mine are only 10 sheets long. Most of the time, it's fine but occasionally, it will just stall and I have to wait like 30 seconds.

I was thinking perhaps my bottleneck was my graphics card. I use Dexpot and Directory Opus at the same time so that it takes a lot of graphics I imagine. I have no idea. I had a Nvidia 1080 but I have a spare 1060 lying around unopened and wondering if I should add it.

Compumind, I'll definitely take your suggestions! And, I'll let you know how it goes this week. I do have pagefile set to like 1 gig already but I'll do exactly what you say. You sound like you know what you are talking about.

By the way, what do you do for a living if it's not too personal of a question. You sound like you know what you are doing. I was just curious.

    Mngerhold,

It's because I'm anal, OCD idiot. I use a program called Dexpot that creates virtual desktops. I even thought about leaving open a blank program in the last desktop and then minimize it and hide the icons on the taskbar via AutoHotkey.

But, the program is always running in the background. Of course, it's great that it's running in the RAM but the CPU will be "bothered" by it once in a while even if it's not in use, no? Maybe, a little process here, a little process there. For some reason, this doesn't sound "perfect" to me. I really don't know how to verbalize it. I like things to be neat and tidy. So, when the program is finished, it should be terminated so the CPU doesn't have to mess with it even if it's just a slight tick once in a while.

Call me an idiot. It's apropos.

I'd rather have the 'ticking' that I can't see or feel! If you want something to worry about, try Process Monitor (by Sysinternals) - and watch how much activity there is, even when you (and the PC) aren't doing anything. Just launched it with no special filters, and it records 287,000 events in some 23 seconds (with no obvious PC activity other than itself).

Hmm...I have some questions. Why should I let the computer manage the pagefile. Shouldn't I completely turn it off because there is no chance that I will run out of RAM?

Also, I see what this program is trying to do but can it really improve the speed? If it did, wouldn't Microsoft just patch their software?

LOL. I have my own small IT consulting practice but I really enjoy creating Ponzi Schemes.

Just let W10 automatically manage the virtual memory.

Process Lasso is very useful in certain process intensive environments.
Install the free version and give it a go - if it makes little difference on the settings which I posted above, you can always remove it after three days of use for a fair test.

    As for Microsoft...

    287,000?

What do you have on that system? Skynet?

Just a comment, some program installations look for the existence of the file just like some look for a Temp folder. Usually a 2GB setting on the OS drive will suffice.
