I want to put the appropriate cache's on the ramdisk to make my computer go faster.
I use AMD Ramdisk, but it allows only 4GB in the free version, you might try:
ImDisk Toolkit download | SourceForge.net it is updated regularly.

I have put into ramdisk my desktop, downloads, documents, temp and also Discord and the browser.
Browser starts instantaneously and since the cache and everything related is there, it runs lightning fast.

Why should I let the computer manage the pagefile. Shouldn't I completely turn it off because there is no chance that I will run out of RAM?
You will not know the difference till you try it, I disable it since Vista. The only problem I had was caused by Deus Ex game, because it required 12GB RAM and I had only 16GB, so it crashed due to missing pagefile.

The difference is obvious (NVMe SSD vs RAMdisk), it is like HDD vs SSD:

    1. Is it true that in 2020, 64-Bit windows 10 will do most of what a RAM disk does by default?
    2. This thread is in the wrong section.

Windows 10 uses compressed memory which is really a fancy disk cache.

There is no point in using RAMdisks.

Who's right and wrong? CHALLENGE OF THE SMARTEST! Who will it be?

Can You Tell Me Who I Should Pick?
It's a battle of wits. The person above says that creating a RAMDisk caused his computer to go lightning fast.

On the other hand, Cerebrus, although he sounds like he's never created a RAMDisk before, is purely speculating that RAMDisks won't make any difference based on his vast knowledge of computers. Who should I believe?

Possibly biased but definitive observation VS pure speculation based upon genius level knowledge of computers?

Who should I believe based upon sound logical reasoning?

***By the way, if you have anything noteworthy to say about the quality of specific RAMDisk programs over another, please let me know!!! I beg you!

My post originally offered money for help. But, the moderator said that this was against their policy and he modified my title and post. However, the moderator never mention anything about slavery! If you could determine the best RAMDisk software and then help me set it up, I'll be your permanent online slave. My life is yours if you so wish it. I will follow you around every website you visit and I will do your bidding - whatever you need. If you want me to constantly call you master and praise your great qualities in threads like this, I will. Deal?

There's no right and wrong. If you use a RAMdisk and find everything more responsive then use one.

    My personal experience:

RAMdisk worked great for me on Windows 7 with superfetch, and prefetch disabled.

The only benefit I found on Windows 10 (SSD) was slightly faster browsing if moving browser cache but since I configure browsers to use RAM cache anyway there's not much point in moving browser cache to RAMdisk.

For eveything else there was only a slight improvement and with only 4GB RAM there was no point in dedicating a chunk of that to RAMdisk for little gain.

Try a RAMdisk and if it works for you - great.

If it doesn't - ditch it.

    Dear Sweetsweetcorn,

How can Windows 10 do what a RAMDisk does by default? That means that every single information that is needed by the CPU is already stored in RAM. How is that logically possible?

I've got the answer! It IS possible.

It will work if your computer has precognition abilities which I hear is on the market in places like Fantasia. About 5 minutes before the CPU needs to read specific info from RAM, a CPU thread will quietly move the required info from my SSD to the RAM. The CPU will queue up all the info that the CPU will need so it never has to access the hard drive. So, even though my SSD is 1 Tb and my RAM is 64 gigs, everything is accessed via RAM!

    That's what you mean, right?

    Dear Callendar,

I am a deebee. I don't know how you say it in your country. I think you call them mentally challenged people. I am a retard so setting up a RAMDisk would require a lot of time and effort on my part. So, I would like to know if the RAMdisk is going to work before I try to set it up. I kid you not. I've tried 4 times setting one up and failed 4 times. In one of those attempts, I bricked my computer. But, I am not ashamed. I am a deebee and it's ok.

Slightly faster browsing is not bad at all. Since my computer is slow sometimes, slightly faster browsing would definitely be a plus.

Did you try to install an entire program that's resource heavy like GIMP or maybe a PDF editor to the RAMDisk?

    RE: Installing programs to RAMdisk.

I could only ever get portable apps to run. And only those that heavily used memory were the ones that were useful to put on it.

    EDIT:

If you move TMP/ TEMP environment variables onto RAMdisk then in theory everything should be faster.

Note: You probably only need a 0.5 to 1GB RAMdisk for that and it will almost certainly never max out.

Anyway just get that old version of Softperfect RAMdisk that I linked and try that.

If you uninstall it don't forget to move TMP and TEMP environment variables off it first.

    Read this:

How to improve your computer performance and SSD life span with a RAM disk

Just create a persistent ramdisk to include a temp files folder then move TMP and TEMP environment variables onto it.

My friend, many people would pray for that amount of RAM in your system!

If the Windows pagefile is set so that the OS manages virtual memory, you do not need a ramdiak - in fact, it will decrease your performance.
    I agree EXCEPT....

What if one were to manually move the pagefile to the ramdisk?
