Hi all
I came to this thread looking for a way to change the context menu looks, but did not quite succeed. Not via any of the utilities mentioned (including the legacy display properties dialog).
I did however find a way to do that using a third party software named "Transparent Menu":
Moo0 Transparent Menu (Free) - Let's enjoy transparent menus!
A comparison between the old and new context menus can be seen here:

Is there an alternative method to achieve this without third party tools? Or perhaps with some freeware app (the aforementioned software had some caveats regarding usage at workplaces).
Cheers
This appears to be what is known to programmers as an ownerdraw menu. This is a technique that allows a program to take full control over the appearance of it's own menus. This can also be done globally with a custom DLL but it is not a simple thing. Apparently the software in question is doing this.
I am quite certain Windows does not expose this kind of functionality directly to the user. There may be some free and unrestricted software that can do this but I am not aware of such.
An update: I have ultimately been able to ameliorate the context menu looks using a freeware solution. The 64-bit / regular context menu was improved with the help of "ExplorerContextMenuTweaker", and the 32-bit context menu (only available in my 32-bit third party file manager) using a 32-bit version of TortoiseSVN, which had the curious effect of transforming it to the XP style (either a bug or a feature, it was what I had been looking for).

I want this type of classic color and font customization back into Windows 10.
