Another question....please see Clasurol's post above. I managed to extract a more recent version of desk.cpl from a windows 7 and windows xp iso compared to the version from NT beta. When I execute desk.cpl from either source, it launches the Win10 Display window (naturally). But when I rename to something different, like deskc.cpl as above, the old window color and appearance window does not open, in fact, nothing opens. Do you know how to fix this? I assume that something in the desk.cpl needs to be changed, like a CLSID to point to the old window rather than the Win10 version but this is beyond my knowledge. Can you help please? If you want, I can send the desk.cpl files I extracted. Will they be blocked?

    Thanks, JW
The desk.cpl file has been hard coded to redirect to Settings > Display in Windows 10.

The old Window Color and Appearance window below from Windows 7 has been completely removed in Windows 10. I'm not aware of a way to restore it. Plus, many of the settings in it are no longer valid in Windows 10.

Understood. I am guessing that the Wintools Advanced Font Changer and Color Control Panel/SMACC take the place of the old color and appearance window for those that don't want to constantly tweak registry settings?

It is one tool that aims to make such things more convenient and safer, but doesn't necessarily cover all possibilities.

All the "Item" options should still be valid even on W10. Fonts, yeah, that's pointless now as MS made it mandatory the system font practically impossible to change unless you use system font substitution. EDIT: Turns out Font is still able to be modified via this applet.

Got it. Is there any advantage of Color Control Panel over SMACC or do they do pretty much the same thing?

They are independently developed, so no necessary correlation except they both tweak the same system. The choice is yours.. whichever does what you want in the way you prefer.

You might also like to have a look at Winaero's reputable tweaker- a few items relate to appearance including text size, font, certain colour tweaks.. but many more as well.

I have batch scripts that will change window background color, window frame color, window text color, title bar text color and highlighted text color.

Very nice! Thank you. I know nothing about writing bat or vbs files or coding. Is there a good beginner website you recommend and, also, is there a reference webpage you used to write the bat files? Especially one that explained all of the registry settings?
