Change Item Order in "New" Context Menu?

    W10: LTSB 2016 (build 1607).

    Basically this menu:

Is there a way to sort the order? Other methods don't seem to work with this sub-menu.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks! :)

Hi, whilst there is plenty written about adding to this and disabling items, I've never seen any way or anything available in the registry related to the relevant keys that supports any way of doing this, I'm afraid.

Below the folder and shortcut items at the top, the rest sometimes seem to be alphabetical, but this is not consistent.

Just FYI, this is an excellent article, but doesn't mention changing the order.

Doesn't answer your need, but possibly an interesting article on the order in which they appear.

Also, haven't tried this method, but it may be able to at least get one or more items above the top separator ?
How do I reorder the items in Explorer's New menu in Windows 10? - Super User

ps: Again, this doesn't answer your need, but just a note to say I tried the method shown on the Superuser page, and can confirm being able to at least move (my most used item/s) above the Separator (albeit in the same aphabetical order of the extension).

Thank you to the both of you. Both of your links gave me great insight into how this sub-menu works, so much so that I've been able to isolate the reg key that governs it:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\ShellNew

Only problem is, the key overrides and defaults back whenever you edit it. I'm anxious about setting it to read-only as this key seems to corrupt people's user accounts. Not sure if I will proceed with it.

Thank you to the both you again, I'm very very appreciative.

Well done for finding it. However, the way it is handled doesn't seem to allow you to actually make a useful change as you say. It's somewhat interesting observing the string change as you change the order in the list below.

Doesn't seem to be a registry permission issue as far as I can see though.

Managed to get it to stick with help from this website I found whilst googling for that reg key: windows10 how to adjust the order of the new desktop right-click menu options? - Programmer Sought

It's in broken English and all the pictures use Chinese text for the system language, but it's easy enough to figure out.

Basically, edit the Classes value, then change right-click on the ShellNew and select permissions. Make sure ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES is selected then click Advanced.

On the next screen, select Disable Inheritance and then on the dialog pop-up select the first option. Then click on each of the three top users (Your account, SYSTEM, and Administrators) and hit the edit button, untick "Full Control" on each account, clicking OK each time.

Note: right clicking on the desktop at any point before you untick Full Control on all three accounts and saving the permissions will revert it to it's default value.

    Proof it works:

Many thanks again, could not have worked this out without you guys. Cheers!

Excellent. However you might find this is lost on any major upgrade or in-place upgrade repair install.

Note that you can add any file type to the New menu (see article I posted in post #2). I have some reg files configured for several file types e.g docx, doc etc which can be useful if you don't have MS Office or WPS office installed.

Further note that the file created can be according to your personal template file, as you can create a template for most types with your personalised settings.
