I can't change folder icons

Windows Home Version 1909

Here is what I did I have went and pressed Windows + R and then in there I went to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer" without quotes. And I added the "Shell Icons" folder in the "Explorer Folder" and then on the right side in the open area. I right clicked and "New" and then "String Value" and then I also put in 4. After that I also tried a icon that I download from the internet. I even tried the "C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,-290" and after this even after logging out or restarting the only place where the icons changed was in the RegEditor but not anywhere else.

I even tried to change the default folder icons and that just left me with a white icon. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I even used the "Rebuild Icon Cache" and that didn't help ether.



I hope someone can help me figure out where I went wrong.

Right ckick on the folder choose properties the customise you can change options there

If I change the icons for downloads and 3d on the left hand side will that also change the icons on the right side in the main window area. Plus if I change the icons in the left side will the icons in the yellow folder change to the new icons or will there just be the new icons and no yellow folder.

Or do I need to change the left side with 1 tutorial and then the main right side with a different tutorial. Just wondering!

If you change a folder's icon, it will chnage everywhere.

Those are different forms of the same icon. Windows uses the overlay version for larger displays and the simplifed version for smaller icons.
