Classic Shell/Open Shell users.... cant move/modify start menu items?

So ive been using classic shell and its new incarnation for years. I have had it running on my two workhorses and figured its time to shove it over to my laptop.

I did so, but for some reason when I try to move shortcuts into a new folder etc, I'm greeted with "Destination folder access denied" and a request to provide permission.

Obviously I can provide permission and carry on, but that would get real old, real fast.

Any idea whats going on there? I didn't "think" i did anything differently, though it is on an insider build if that could potentialy have bearing.

What skin are you using , the latest version of Open Shell works all the way to and including 19559.1000.

You have to use the settings on the start menu as shown below.

Ok, i think ive identified the crux of the issue, its twofold, and i dont know how to solve it - but i see whats causing it at least lol.

So first, open-shell's behavior in general. When creating folders within the start menu itself via organize start menu > new folder, the resulting folder is created in the users or allusers capacity depending on where the folder you clicked on to initiate the command resides.

best I can tell, theres no way to designate, or choose its location beyond that. The only reason i discovered it, is because of the original issue popping up on my laptop.

I seemed to have been moving, and creating folders that were rooted in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

now on my two desktops, I can move between these folders, create in either folder etc etc with not so much as a hiccup.

my laptop is demanding permission for everything I do on the programdata side of the fence.

Hope this helps clarify and provide enough information for a solution.

    Thanks gentlemen.

Try this, I just did it. It's a permission thing.

First, my Open Shell. Yes, I have a lot of crap in it!

As an example, if I right click Miscellaneous, Open, I get this.

Now, the issue is the "Start Menu" folder itself. ^ up a couple of times to get the that in Explorer.

Right click the Start Menu folder>properties>Security tab. Find your user name. highlight it and click Edit. Now click Full access. Apply, ok, etc. and get out.

You shouldn't have the permission nag any more.

Hmm. It appears youre right. (admittedly vague on permissions stuff, thats why i never mess with them, unfortunately its also why im still vague lol).

No idea how they got this way and a bit embarassed i didnt think to simply compare the security tab across machines ;P

either way, just gave full permission on the laptop and the only thing that leaves question is the popup i got near the end of it "doing its thing" which said something along the lines of

    Error applying security
    path\to\Windows PowerShell
Failed to enumerate objects in the container access is denied.

is this normal expected? or another issue i have to correct?

EDIT: Ahah! i booted a win10 VM to compare, and thats because there shouldnt be a powershell folder on that side at all. No idea what on earth happened to this laptop.

mustve been the jumping and mucking around in windows slow/fast rings and back n forth over the years :P

I never fooled with anything involving Open Shell in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. I did it in the directory of OS.

You can't move shortcuts from those directories, you have to make copies, then hide the folders/shortcuts you don't want to see.
