Desktop: change icon autoarrange order from columns to rows

    Hello,

I have an issue with the autoarrange of icons on the desktop. I like to organized my icons in rows and have several rows with different grouped icons. However, when I download new files to my desktop, their icons are automatically arranged in columns on the desktop, thus creating columns of icons that are perpendicular to my organized rows.

I would like that the new files that I download to the desktop autoarrange themselves as a new row, specifically in the first row at the top of the desktop. How can I achieve this?

    Thank you in advance!

    (Windows 10 OS version 18363.535)

The basic issue with the desktop is that it is not Static like a picture on a wall but Dynamic, always being redrawn/refreshed when there's any change on it or sometimes when something being held in memory/RAM by programs that are running makes changes. It's shown as a folder in File Explorer.

Some folks have found third-party software on the Internet for restoring the desktop so maybe they can do as desired, have not kept any references for them.

    Hello Burton,

Thank you for your response, but I don't see how it makes any reference to the problem I have posted. I think it is common knowledge what you say about the desktop, but my problem makes reference to how new icons are arranged on it automatically. This automatism is probably controlled by the OS somewhere (maybe registry?) and this is what I want to find out and change.

Sorry, not finding a way to do it in Windows but I just installed Linux Mint 19.3 on an 11" Notebook and it has the ability for a horizontal or vertical list of shortcuts on the desktop on the right-click context menu and Customize of the desktop.
