My simple approach is to keep a large selection of wallpaper which is of appropriate more limited colour and contrast range takan from a variety of photo sites and others (not just dedicated wallpaper sites) and use those, rather than random ones that might be offered by other means.
The difficulty in what you're suggesting is that the font parameters would need to be related to some assessment of the characteristics of the wallpaper.
