Changing taskbar icons?

Imageres.dll contains all icons, but not those for network, battery and speaker in notification area. For changing these you must open and modify the relevant DLL file. In case you mixed up the icons, you can repeat the process as follows:

Open Windows 7 or 8.1 version of imageres.dll. Select all icons by clicking the first, holding SHIFT and clicking the last. Click on the down triangle button at bottom right to reveal more actions. Click on Extract selected resources. Browse to a folder to extract all the icons. Close Customizer God and reopen it. Open Windows 10 version of imageres.dll Click the first icon, hold SHIFT and click the last to select all. Click on Change button and browse to the folder with the icons. Every icon will be replaced with the corresponding file having the same number. If there is no such file for an icon, this remains unchanged, but usually there is 1:1 match. Close program, logoff and login to see changes.

So, If I only wanted to change Windows 10's WiFi/Ethernet notification tray icons back into Win8's, how would I do that?

With every Windows Cumulative Update some icons are restored to default. Usually these include the network/Wi-Fi icons. I use Customizer God (see my earlier posts in this thread) to change them to Windows 8.1 icons. I have extracted the Windows 8.1 icons in a folder (you can do that from Customizer God if you have the respective Windows 8.1 DLLs), open the pnidui.dll (this is for network icons) and then replace the icons with those in the folder.

The files are:

batmeter.dll (battery icons)
imageres.dll (folder and everything else, once changed these usually never are restored)
pnidui.dll (network icons)
sndvolsso.dll (audio icons)
stobject.dll (USB icons)

all are in C:\Windows\system32

If you want you can replace them with the respective Windows 7 icons instead. All you have to do is extract the icons from Windows 7 or 8 DLLs in a folder with the file's name (to identify them easily) and then replace Windows 10 icons with these. Both functions extract/replace are done with Customizer God.

Wanted to thank you for this thread. I went ahead and replaced the volume icons (win8's has a solid white speaker, which is better), in addition to the network barchart icons from win8.

Now my only issue with Win10 is that File Explorer never remembers it's position when you close and open it again, it always cascades to the right/down, as though you're opening a second instance of FE.

I haven't noticed this. I don't know how to fix it. Have a look at the Folder options in Control Panel.

No! Don't touch shell.dll or shell32.dll! In Windows 64-bit it displays a message that the file is not signed and cannot load desktop and keeps restarting! Any icon you want is in imageres.dll, edit this only.

customizer god doesn't work with 1903 Windows 10 version! The icons are in the SNDVOL.exe File not the SNDVOLISSO.DLL FILE

I have recently upgraded Windows 10 v1809 to v1903 and I noticed some issues while trying to change the icons with Customizer God. First of all, I have an old version that doesn't open the relevant DLL files automatically, but you can open them manually with CTRL+O. I also tried the latest version, didn't make any difference. I usually change the battery icons (batmeter.dll), the general icons (imageres.dll), the network icons (pnidui.dll), the sound icons (SndVolSSO.dll) and the USB safe eject icon (stobject.dll). So naturally, as I always do after upgrading to a new build, I opened batmeter.dll, selected all the icons and replaced them with the Windows 8.1 icons (I have them saved in a folder). This was done as usual, no issues. I then opened imageres.dll selected all icons and tried to replace them with those of Windows 8.1 but during the process there was an error and the changes were rejected. I then tried to replace them a few at the time, rather than all of them at once. The first 20-30 icons were successfully replaced. Once I tried to replace the next 20 icons there was an error, the icons were corrupted and some icons were of Windows 8.1 (replaced successfully) while others were all replaced with the Windows shield icon. Restoring the icons from Customizer God didn't work, so I had to restore the system files using System File Checker (sfc /scannow) at Command Prompt as Administrator. This also undone the changes for the battery icons. I then decided to leave imageres.dll as it is with the original icons and only change the others. I changed batmeter.dll I then changed the network icons (pnidui.dll). When I tried to change the sound icons I got an error. So I selected only the volume icons and they changed successfully. I then changed the USB eject icon (stobject.dll) and that's it. One glitch I saw was that when muted I see the "no sound card" icon (speaker with red X) instead of the muted icon. So far, I haven't found an easy and safe way to change all the icons in imageres.dll and I don't want to change them one-by-one! If anyone knows any other software similar to Customized God that could work in v1903, please post!
