    How to gain control

    Number one, I strongly suspect that Windows 10 FORCES me to take updates,
    and I strongly suspect that this is either the root cause or contributing factor in recent crash and lockup to inescapable Preparing Automatic Repair" hanging screen.

    Can't tell you version or build number, all keys and mouse totally unresponsive.

    "help" thread to get me to boot isn't helping.
    First of all, I want to preserve all my Data, not erase all and reinstall Win10.

    Second, tools suggested for boot are confusing and complex.
    I am using an old Win7 computer and need to create something on it that can be put
    into a Win10 computer to make it boot normally again.

    I'm very old, very stressed, very confused, and I only understand when NOTHING IS ASSUMED and every step is given in excruciating detail.

    What I am asking is THIS thread is:

    1. How do I FORCE Win7 and Win10 to allow me to always choose what a download, from anywhere, will be named, so that the name will make sense to ME;

    2. How do I FORCE that downloads will NEVER go to any "default" location, but will instead first ASK me where I think they logically belong?

    3. How do I prevent Microsoft EVIL such as FORCED update downloads, or spying or any of the pushy "Use Edge " and other garbage?

    You say "downloads".

    If you find a picture of a car that you want to keep, you should be able to right click it and choose the specific folder where you want the picture to land. You should be able to name it at that point also---changing a name like "e444554.jpg" to "1957 Chevrolet.jpg" if that's what suits you.

    Are you unable to do that or do I misunderstand your question 2 above?

    I tend to save everything to a "downloads" default folder and then manually relocate it to the desired long term storage folder.

    Windows Update stuff is another world and you have less control in that world.

    It's not clear what the problem is does it boot ok or not. Saving files is decided by the program you use to download is a browser or FTP. Ms send updates at great expense to fix problems or improve the o/s so it's not wise to want to stop them
