    Some time ago I played with a program that could extract icons from .exe and .dll files. It allowed me saving those .ico files in a Folder then Properties of a shortcut allowed using an icon in that Folder be used. It's been a long time and I haven't been able to recall the name but a Search of the 'net does find something.
