@Brink
my usb drive would not make any changes ti the icon with the autorun.inf method. every step is done the correct way. I even contacted a microsoft technician and he couldn't help it. how can I fix it?
Yes the icon is unblocked.
I even turned off my antivirus and firewall, thinking it might cause this problem. But no changes.
If you like, upload the .ico file here, and I'll be happy to test it on my system with a USB flash drive to help rule out an issue with it.
Do you remember if you did anything to block autorun.inf files like below?
Autorun.inf Files - Completely Block - Windows 7 Help Forums
As a test, have you tried using the .ico file on another internal drive and USB flash drive to see if this is only happening with this USB drive or all external or internal drives?
I believe the 34x200 is to large however I have not been able to find the size requirement documented anywhere ??? The one I tried is 48x48. It appears nicely.
I played with the size and there seems to be no limit. I blew the number of pixels up to 192x192 It still displayed it. But there was a noticeable pause when File Explorer went to display it. So size is not the problem.

I’m sure I didn’t block it, but looks like the problem is solved by doing the unblock process.
So it should be the antivirus regedit self activity, because when I stopped protection by the antivirus the problem still persisted.
Thank you so much for you help.

No it was not the size. My friend had already tried the same icon and text, and it worked for him. So I knew s.th is wrong with my system. It was the registry edited by antivirus as far as I can see
I have started having this issue with a USB thumb drive. My other USB hard drives still work fine with the autorun.inf file. I've done everything suggested in this thread. I even over wrote the file with a working one from another drive. I checked the drive for errors too.
I'm using Windows 10 Pro build 18362.19h1_release.190318-1202
