folder icons I Customize keep reverting back to default

Like it says on the title. The only thing I can add to that, this is happening on internal HDD that is other than my OS drive.
I customized icons but after reboot, they keep reverting back to default. For years this was not an issue and all of a sudden it is...

An example would be helpful to see what it is doing.
are you customizing using the standard icon selection or your own?
if your own you might to create a folder on your OS drive (name it icon or whatever) and put your special
icons there. then change them pointing the shortcuts to that folder.

    Simple stuff really

I have folders. I categorize them with looks because well it's better for my eyes since it is less focusing time and effort to try to read them instead.

I make or collect appropriate icons and I assign them to those specific folders. And then I create shortcuts to place them in the desktop which then will have the designated icon.

The shortcuts display those icons just fine. But the original folder that had the icon assigned in the first place, after a reboot, is replaced with generic folder icon...

when you assign a custom icon to a folder, its read-only attribute is set and a hidden, system file named desktop.ini is created within the folder. So check before & after reboot if the attribute is being cleared or the file being deleted. Possibly 3rd-party protection software is being over-zealous.

    NO desktop.ini

Unfortunately no hidden desktop.ini file in any of my icon customized folders.

It's "double-hidden " (system attribute set as well). Check your folder view options:
