I want my Classic Shell back

Have been using Classic Shell Start Menu for a long time. After a couple of recent Win 10 updates the Classic doesn't start automatically after reboot. Instead, it starts in Win 10 tiles. Click on Classic, it reverts to Classic, then upon reboot the tiles are back again.

I understand the need in tiles on tablet or a smartphone, but for a desktop screen I find Classic less distracting, easier to navigate and customize.

Is there anything that can be done?

(PS: for those not familiar with Classic - it gives Start Menu a Win 7/8 look. No tiles.)

Hi, check it's set to start automatically in its settings.

You can reinstall it of course.

Note that Classic Shell has been superseded by Open Shell (functionally same, open source) as the author ceased development, but CS is still valid.

Thanks. My settings in CS remain the same, - "start automatically". Will try to reinstall or replace it with Open Shell.

IIRC, that this is one of Win 10 particulars, - it reverts to Win 10 default apps when detecting an old app. So maybe replacing with Open Shell will be better.

Both are in use by forum members.

    - I've not seen this or heard of this myself, nor of CS being affected by updates.

Hopefully reinstalling it - which should be straightforward- will solve the problem. If changing to OS, you might want to back up settings beforehand, just to be safe.

I completely uninstalled the CS with Revo and reinstalled it, everything is back to normal, doesn't revert to Win tiles upon reboot. Thanks for the tip on backing up settings - saved me time after this clean install.

Trust me, Win 10 does have this dislike of old apps. I have a free 2013 WinZip (later versions are for-pay). Every time I use it, my 3rd party media player, browser and even MS Office Picture Manager (bootstrapped to newer Office where they removed it) - all reverts to Win 10 defaults. Then I have to Open With -> Use another app -> click on the app that I want, then it's all good - until I use Win Zip again.

CS was never affected by WInZip - but it did revert to Win 10 tiles before, I think after some updates.

Can you restore our classic shell settings into open shell?

I would love to switch over but I'd hate to go back through all those settings again.

I am happy with Classic, don't see any need to switch to Open. You may try to backup the Classic settings and then import this backup file into Open as per instructions (after you've installed the Open).

Basic setup in Classic takes less than half an hour, I would imagine the Open being not much different. Nice app, can't blame them for offering too many skins to choose from :)

I believe I installed Open Shell Updates over Classic Shell already installed. However, I only use Start Menu and not Explorer. Anyway, it has been working fine with no problems.

Absolutely. Simply save them somewhere (desktop), to be safe uninstall CS (no need, but you can), install Open Shell, load the settings file.

    Cool, I'm in then.

PS... Didn't have to backup and restore the settings, they picked up on their own.
