    Removing shortcut arrows no longer works after recent windows update.

    I have been using the same registry tweak for years to hide shortcut arrows to give my desktop a more sleek look. Since a couple of days ago the same tweak no longer works.

    Adding to shell icons

    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons]

    "29"="%SystemRoot%\\Blank.ico,0"
    while adding a blank icon to the system folder has worked for as long as i can remember. Now it returns a black box instead.

    I can get it to go mostly away with
    Code:
    %windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50
    instead of the blank.ico trick but it creates a border type looking image that looks like this image

    anyone with more experience than me with the registry can find this border thing so i can remove it? or suggest an alternative fix?

    Try doing it the easy way - and much more too, with this free reputable tool with full explanation:

    Hello @Bajungadustin, and welcome to Ten Forums.

    Have you also tried the "transparant.ico" download in the yellow tip box under step 2 of Option 1 below?

    I cant imagine there is any possible easier way to tweak this than Brink's initial file that i have been using for several years. From the time i decided to remove arrows after i reinstalled windows the whole process of removing the arrows took about 5 seconds. Literally. I have seen this took before but im more interested in how this tool does that and if so whats it tweaking in the registry because i can make a text file that will do all of that upon click without having to download additional programs.

    I found a solution.

    Winaero was just using the exact same method as was previously working but with a smaller 24x24 icon. Im not sure the cause but pulling out the 24x24 blank.ico from Winaero tweaker and using that as the icon in @Brink original solution did the trick. I was able to keep the results after uninstalling winaero tweaker

    The tutorial below has been updated to also include the 24x24 blank.ico file to help others with the same issue.
