    Background Picture Location

    Hi all,

I have a folder with about 2000 pics in it which I use as background pics being randomly selected. When a pic is displayed as the current background, is there any way to find the file in the folder. I don't want to have to scroll through each pic to find the current background pic to be able to delete it. I only have one folder where all the pics are.

    I have used the ...
    %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\CachedFiles

command but that only gives the cached file location, not the actual location.

Let me know if I need to provide more details.

    Thanks in advance

If I understand, you want to find the original picture used as wallpaper in a File Explorer folder. Unless someone has another option, I'm afraid that you do have to scroll through your folder, as Windows only makes a COPY of the current desktop picture in this hidden file here - C:\Users[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper (no extension but you can r-click and open with your default photo viewer). If you deleted the original, the wallpaper would remain the same.

Yes. @mrgeek's post gave me the clue I needed to find it. Open Regedit and look at:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Here you will find a REG_BINARY value called TranscodedImageCache. Being a Binary value it's difficult to read, but with care you can make out the file name. Here my background is using random images from my Pictures\Wallpaper folder, the currently transcoded image is 309732.jpg

If wishing to dig further, the first line here is the location of the installed Themes images and the second line is the image currently displayed, will change if selecting Next desktop background:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\RoamedThemeFiles\DesktopBackground

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\CachedFiles
