How to skip "Windows can't open this type of file" dialog via Registry

Trying to make opening unknown file types a little bit less painful.

Is it possible to skip the "Windows can't open this type of file" dialog and go straight to the "Open with" dialog (that you get after you click on "Try an app on this PC" and then click on "Look for another app on this PC")?

I'm asking for a general solution, not for .ape specifically.

You need to assign a default association for the file type.
