    Screensaver Will Not Even Preview

Just built a new WIN 10 Desktop computer and WIN 10 (newly purchased copy) is up to date. I have power-on options set at always-on (no sleep or hibernate). I went to set the built-in WIN screen saver and when I hit the Preview button all I get is a black screen and the wait/hourglass circulating icon. When I press escape key I get a message that the computer needs to report the issue to Microsoft, which I do.

I ran SFC to be sure all WIN files are fine and get a clean bill of health from it.

Anybody have a fix for this as the screensaver will not even Preview, let alone work after the set time.

The screensaver function is being depreciated & will eventually be removed. I’ve read many stories about the in-built screensavers not working well so would think your problem is related to that.
It appears third-party screensavers are not affected.

Which one? One of the standard ones?

I have noticed that "bubbles" preview works but the actual screensaver doesn't whereas "3D text" works fine.

Like @Bastet said screensaver is deprecated but it should mostly work (except for "bubbles" which was partially removed to some security risk).

Thanks for the responses guys! Here are some more details and testing:

When I select any of the included Screen Savers in the dropdown box, I can immediately see each one of them working in the small prescreen in the selection window above the dropdown box. However, as soon as I hit the Preview button to sample it full screen, the entire screen turns black and I get the spinning wait/hourglass icon indicating something is trying to be executed but is not. I have to hit Escape and the I get the following message:

"Bubbles ScreenSaver is not Responding. If you close the program you might lose some information".
It gives me two options: 1. Wait for program to respond, or 2. Close the Program. When I select Close the Program it states: "Hang on while we report the problem to Microsoft". I get a quick green progress bar and in about 5 seconds the report is made and the program closes.

I did just notice that if I select the "3D Text" (WIN 10) screensaver it works both in full Preview Mode and after the set time. If I select any other (Mystify, Bubbles, Ribbons) it does not and I get the black screen and gets hung up in the wait mode. I did check in File Explorer to be sure all the included screen saver files (*.scr) were in the WIN System32 folder and they are . . . Any thoughts? . . .I'd like to use Mystify as the Screen Saver.

    Some additional specs per request:
TYPE: Homebuilt Desktop PC (5th build)
    OS: WIN 10 Home
    CPU: Intel i7 8700k
    MEM: 16Gb
    GRAGHICS: Gigabyte GTX 1050
    MOTHERBOARD: MSI Z370 Pro Carbon
    C: Samsung 250Gb SSD

I checked mine and all the included choices worked, settled on the AnyTime Screensaver that came with a third-party Organizer of the same name. One setting feature that has been removed from Control Panel is Display although putting screensaver in Search brings it up. In Settings it is on the Personalization, Lock Screen item.

    OK.
After leaving the "3DText" Screen Saver on, and then directly switching to Mystify, Mystify now works. The issue with the Preview Button hanging up the screensaver app is still there however with all built-in screensavers except 3D Text (where only the latter does not hang the app on preview).

In C:\Windows\System32 does the bubbles.scr, or another .scr file, work when double-clicked?

Yes it does. See above that was posted at the same time. I'm going to live with the fact that the Screen Saver's Preview Button hangs up the application on all MS imbedded screensavers except for some reason 3D Text (WIN 10 Logo) and hope my computer's reporting the issue to Microsoft will stir some action. Accordingly, I will mark the issue closed, Thanks for all the responses.
