Win 10 keeps re-arranging my desktop?

I have the occasional case (maybe once per week) that Windows decides to re-arrange my desktop icons each and every time I change *anything* on the desktop (e.g. move an existing icon or add another one) but apparently also sometimes "out-of-the-blue".
Then my carefully arranged desktop gets "re-arranged", i.e. all icons are moved to some - apparently random - position on the screen. Meanwhile I have installed a utility to correct that (Iconoid) which allows me to save a layout and re-apply it, but I have to trigger that utility again and again during the course of a day to correct the garbled layout again. After half a day or a day that "phenomenon" is gone and the desktop gets well-behaved again.

Why is that so? What could cause Windows 10 Pro to decide that it needs to rearrange all icons? Why are there days where it does that all the time and others, where this doesn't happen at all?

BTW: I have disabled the "Autoarrange" and "Align to grid" settings in the desktop's View-menu. It *me* who wants to have authorative control of where desktop icons get placed!

Hi, this had been observed by some users for several generations of Windows as you will find from a general search. It is not experienced by all.

It's been very extensively discussed on this forum e.g.

    The unlikeliest of culprit

I spent quite a while trying to figure what was causing Windows 10 re-arrange the icons on startup. What maintained my interest was the fact that I had grown fond of my icon layout. It was part of me and had to remain standing...

I think maybe it was just chance that I found my desktop icons' enemy. And its name was Logitech.

As strange as it sounds, Logitech software, which I installed to take advantage of keyboard and mouse features, was causing my desktop icons to increase in size by 1 "increment" every time Windows started up. The affect of this was all too obvious if you know how Windows UI reacts to an icon size change. It basically takes your icon layout, throws it against the nearest fan, and lets them fall where they may. Or at least that what it looks like, and might as well be true.

If you are experiencing this issue, and have Logitech software installed on your machine that boots at startup (TouchPoint, possibly other newer iterations), pay close attention to the icon size after startup. Startup a couple times and if the icons increase one click each boot, then go to the desktop, hold down CTRL key, and use your mouse wheel to notch the desktop icon size back down one notch. Does that return all your icons to their original and desired locations? If so, uninstall the Logitech software and see if the issue goes away. It did for me.

@trunkmonkey Interesting catch! Thanks for reporting this!

I don't have any Logitech SW installed, though, so I don't think that they were the reason here. But I'll have an eye on possible similar SW, though. Luckily I don't have these icon re-arrangements that frequently any more these days. They still strike now and then but thanks to Iconoid they aren't much of an issue any more.
