    How to change folder and drive icons

    I recently happened upon a few of Brink's tutorials on how to change folder icons sys wide, and in This PC. They were so effective that I sent him a pm to thank him. But that also posed a few questions in my mind, and he thought they would be a good addition to the thread. So for anyone who has any experience with it, I'd love to know if anyone has been able to change the folder icons for sys folders in C:\ Program Files, Program Files (86), Users and Windows. I get that changing permissions can destabilize the system, but was thinking we should be able to change the icon without all of that happening. I would also be interested in knowing if anyone has managed to change the individual drive icons in This PC? Thanks for any input.

    Create two files

    An icon file - drive.ico

    An Autorun.inf file containing the following
    Code:
    [autorun]
    icon="drive.ico"
    Place both files in the root of the drive and reboot. The icon file can be called anything just match the name in the Autorun.inf file.

    Works like a charm! Thanks so much. Now the hard part is finding icons that DON'T look like cartoons. I really hate that 98% of all bitmaps, icons and other graphics for Windows look like they are straight from a kids book. It's like the entire IT industry has refused to grow up. LOL. Why is it so hard to find serious looking, modern cool graphics??? So I will be scouring the net for some great drive icons I would be happy to look at every day. I found a few tolerable ones for the time being. But I'd really like to find something a lot more detailed. You can check these out below. The search begins...

    Okay, I have put several on there to see which ones I really like over the next few days. I'm curious what you guys think? Are there any that you like better than the others? Cheers!

    Just for aesthetics, I have made a small adjustment. And this is what I will go with for a the next few days. By the way, I can control the amount of transparency, and it looks way more transparent in the screen capture than it actually does on the computer, or I'd adjust it darker.
