    No Startup or Shutdown Sound

Yes, I have the box checked to play sounds on startup under the sound tab in Control Panel. Does anyone have any ideas for me? When I test other sounds on the sound tab they play fine.

I have noticed that Dolby Home Theater v4 did not migrate with the upgrade from Win 7.

Thanks. I am beginning to think so. I see some information discussing just that case that no sounds are available for faster boot and shutdown. I would love to hear from an MS expert or software engineer confirming that.

What is strange is the fact that there are Windows Exit and Startup sounds within the Window's Media system folder and a box to check to enable Startup sounds via the control panel. This seems more than confusing to give the illusion to provide an option when it isn't possible.

I did find many sounds are made invisible from the CPL (control panel list) with registry keys that can be modified from 1 to 0 to make them visible. I also unchecked the fast boot option in Power Options. I still could not get a Startup or Shutdown sound.

If there are any expert level opinions we'd love to hear from you.

As far as I understand, in order to get faster boot times Windows 10 doesn't completely shut down your computer but instead merely sends it into hybernation and then cuts off power. This is why you get no sound, because Windows 10 doesn't have the option for logging in and out sounds, which it is what you are doing when the "fast startup" option is enabled (it is, by default). You would need to disable that option to fully shutdown your system and then you should get a sound when starting windows, which is not worth it if you ask me.

Thanks for the reply. In my last post close to the end I already stated, "I also unchecked the fast boot option in Power Options. I still could not get a Startup or Shutdown sound." which you suggested. So that doesn't work. There are two ways to shutdown 10 that I know have technically different shutdowns. 1. Left click on "start" > left click "Power" > left click "Shutdown" - which I understand is a hybrid shutdown similar to what you describe. 2. Right clicking on "start" > hover over "Shut down or sign out" > select from menu "Shut down". I understand this bypasses the "Fast Boot Option" option to give you a full shut down. As described I get no sounds in any combination of shut down choices.

If there are any expert level opinions we'd love to hear from you.

Startup sound does actually play when I perform a Restart (while "Play startup sound" option is selected of course). No such thing for usual Shutdown option though.

    Correct.

If you go to the Windows Folder > Media you will find Windows Shutdown & Windows Startup sound (.wav) file in my final 10240 build. The shutdown sound when played is pretty normal. The startup one is just a single percussion like pop like the wood rods in music class.

However, if you go to registry editor HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels you will find the sounds.
What is strange is you will find a "System Exit" entry but no one labeled that would be a startup sound for Windows. Some sounds have an additional registry "ExcludeFromCPL" (control panel list) such as Windows Logoff, Logon and SytemExit. I modified the values from 1 to 0 so they would not be excluded from the CPL. They show up but no sound. I did not delete those entries but just changed the values.

I have wondered why no startup sound is in this registry position and would there be a startup sound if one was added.

I still would like to hear an expert opine on the overall situation - how to get Startup and Shutdown sounds working or if they can't be made to do so.

    Try to follow this :
lick Start< Run and type regedit and hit enter. Once Registry Editor opens highlight Hkey_Current_User. Once it is highlighted look on the right column which will show a Reg_SZ value with the name (default). Right click this value and hit delete. Reboot the computer and test.
    And good luck ~

An interesting suggestion with partial results.

I tried to delete the key as directed but it would not let me?

So I modified the key value from "(value not set)" to 1 and then to 0 and got the same following results for both modified settings:

Using both methods of shutdown described earlier I did get a startup sound!
I did not get a shutdown sound or Logon/Logoff sounds.

So with the value set to 0 once again I tried to delete the key. It would not delete but the value changed back to the original "(value not set)" condition. Upon further testing with this condition reset back to same "(value not set)" I still got the startup sound as the 0 and 1 setting and did not get a Shutdown sound or Logon/Logoff sounds as before.

Windows 10 seems buggy with inconsistent results. However I did get a startup sound after I modified the values (and attempted to delete) the key you suggested. I can toggle the startup sound now via the control panel mentioned earlier by checking or unchecking the appropriate box. Thank you.

Post Edit: The "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" box has to be unchecked in Power Options for the startup sound to work under the above conditions. Apparently, checking this does circumvent checking to "Play Windows Startup sound" in Sounds within the Control Panel. I still have not been able to enable a shutdown sound so this thread title remains partially solved.

I would welcome more expert comments - especially concerning enabling Shutdown sound or Logon/Logoff sounds.

hello.. I did this (turned off the "quick start" and got my startup sound :)..
question... why will Windows 10.. not come out of an/a Sleep mode?.. meaning... I close the lid of my laptop... (Dell XPS L1502)
see the XPS light go into a sleep mode ( the xps light slowly blinks on and off.. indication seep).. but when I open the lid..
even tho the keyboard wakes up.. the display is blank.. (dark) I have to hold down the power button.. to turn off the laptop completely and re-boot.... is there a fix for this? or ?????
