Still no individual logon or logoff sound. I do have canned windows startup sound. All registry edits have been made and logon and custom logoff sounds are displayed and play correctly in the sounds dialog box. Also, all power settings have been adjusted for full shut down and boot. What the heck?!

Into now my third week with the new Windows 10 'free' download. Upon my initial first start-up with the new 10, I heard a start-up musical sound....but never heard it again! After having done what everyone here has already done, I asked myself do I really care? I mean, you only hear it for a second or two! I think I miss it because of my first experience into the new computer age which was for me with Windows 98, then 2000, then XP...8.1 for a year and now 10. On Youtube, there are sound bites of Windows 10 start published....I haven't found means beyond what people have responded here either. Character and personality are missing with 10 with no greeting or departure.....just like in real life today...I guess!

The Windows Startup sound is actually compiled and stored in: C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll.
If you download: Resource Hacker and open this file. Click on WAVE then you can play it.

In order to play your own Startup Sound. You need to right click and replace with your own.

However, there's an easier way to use a freeware to change it: Startup Sound Changer

Yes, I have the box checked to play sounds on startup under the sound tab in Control Panel. Does anyone have any ideas for me? When I test other sounds on the sound tab they play fine.

I have noticed that Dolby Home Theater v4 did not migrate with the upgrade from Win 7.
I downloaded a program Called Windows 7 "Startup sound changer" from softonic. I tried it on my Windows 10 and it worked fine. Hope it helps you. But can't say the same for "Shutdown Sound". I'm still working on that one. Good Luck!

    Dear topgundcp,
I've been having this issue for quite some time on my windows 10 laptop..and as I'm rather 'old fashonied', I'm so used to hearing that familiar sound on my other computer that I made my mind up to try and do something about it. I performed a search and this message board posting came up. I downloaded/installed the "Resource Hacker" you mentioned in your post, and at least for now I have my sound back..as I've never use that software before..I wasn't really sure if I needed to 'save' the modification or not.
    Thanks SO Much !!

As far as I understand, in order to get faster boot times Windows 10 doesn't completely shut down your computer but instead merely sends it into hybernation and then cuts off power. This is why you get no sound, because Windows 10 doesn't have the option for logging in and out sounds, which it is what you are doing when the "fast startup" option is enabled (it is, by default). You would need to disable that option to fully shutdown your system and then you should get a sound when starting windows, which is not worth it if you ask me.
I too am fighting the logon and shutdown lack of sound on Windows 10. Enabling them in the registry, going into the Sounds control panel they are set correctly to what they were with Windows 7. I did a Windows 7-->10 upgrade rather than a fresh install so it saved the media files.
One observation I have made when I DISABLED fast-boot. My system now takes 7 seconds from the time the bios posts to where I am sitting at the password prompt, with fast-boot ENABLED it takes 15 seconds. Using a Samsung 512 PRO SSD.
