A Question About iTunes and Quicktime

Apple stopped supporting Quicktime for Windows over a year ago. So how does one watch their downloaded movies via iTunes on their Windows PCs if there is no Quicktime anymore?

So if you download iTunes onto Windows, what does it use to play your movies and TV programs?

Google QTLite which I think is still available and is perfectly OK for basic viewing, If you remove iTunes I believe that Windows has native support for most MOV files, If not there is a long list of windows apps that play .Mov files VLC is my preferred option

There is of course a serious problem with apple DRM use and this, not the Quicktime format, may be what will prevent playback, if this is the case then apple are the first stop for information

Yes,..I've been looking into it a little more this morning. VLC is certainly a good option and as you point out, it seems iTunes no longer rely themselves on using Quicktime. I've just opened iTunes on my Mac and played a video and the viewer certainly wasn't the Quicktime I remember. iTunes is now using something else it seems.

Just out of interest I just did some checking ...

This is a custom PC that has never had iTunes or as far as I know Quicktime loaded

My DashCam produces .MOV files and a right click Open With lists six applications I have loaded that will open the files This includes the Windows Photos app, Windows Media Player VLC, and even Photoshop CC (which allows you to edit the movie contents)

It may be that like the Adobe PDF Standard the .MOV file has lapsed into the public domain
