Initially there weren't too many commercial/company apps. Over here Nokia wasn't a big seller. It was always Asian made with Android or iPhone that cell carriers pushed here. Mostly Android because they're so inexpensive. Keeping in mind that's when phones were locked here. Carriers subsidizing/offering two-year upgrades made the less expensive phones more reasonable monthly payments. Open a carrier's page and that's all that was shown at the top was Android. Windows phones were at the bottom. AT&T had the exclusive on iPhone for awhile.
Bottom line as you say is marketing. Shawn mentioned that too. Water over the dam now.
