They're kind of the urban big rats as well as rural. They look nasty when they hiss, lots of sharp teeth. And they are known carriers of rabies.

We had those down in SoCali, they live in Palm Trees & are known to attack tree trimmers when they disturb them by accident.
You can see more pics here if you want. They are usually pretty dirty & do not smell good at all.

We found a big one in the garbage can one morning....sleeping. My Wife had thrown away some meat & apparently the scent lured him in. He probably lowered himself off the porch & fell in, then couldn't get out. We didn't have a lid for the can at the time.
Not being able to get out, he just went to sleep. I took the can out to the edge of the woods & let him go.
Some people keep them as pets, if you find a young one they become tame quickly & act just like a house cat. They can be trained to use litter boxes.
