Thanks Josey. Is that run from admin command prompt inside the OS? or does that have to be done pre-OS?

That smells for overheating. Find out why. What was he/she doing while fans were going crazy. Overheating could affect any hardware component in there (processor, memory, chipset...)
Check for possible malware or addware (bitcoin mining could be going on while on internet, etc)
The fan issue was at initial boot.

Unlikely - Avast nothing, MBAM nothing, SAS nothing, Defender nothing.

    Hi TC.

The errors in reliability history were all over the place - nothing made sense. So, I removed the paging file, uninstalled MBAM and a lot of other programs that aren't "stock". Rebooted fine a couple times, (but it does that, and then messes up later). So making an image now, and will try an in-place repair later this evening.

It kept saying corrupt/missing system files, but all dism commands and sfc /scannow run successfully. It's a 32-bit system - I'm wondering if this has something to do with the problems. Remember the other day, I had a 32-bit W7 machine with issues due to MBAM and Avast, after the latest windows updates. Well, the mystery continues..... :)

No it has to run from a Boot Disk so you would need help at the remote end.

Okay, I could always have it boot to Macrium recovery environment, and do the Fix Boot feature from there - easier for them....thanks!
