For anyone here in the U.S., if I put one of those "Digital Information Displays" in my rear windshield, do you think I'd get in trouble with law enforcement?

I found one online that is 26" x 4" and I don't think that would be too obtrustive...
The only thing such a display should say in the back of a car is

"If you can read this, you are to ****ing close!"

(and I am not joking - anything that encourages other users to tailgate is dangerous!)

I don't know if all doctors have them over here but our doctors do, every time it beeps a new message scrolls across asking for the next one.

The doctor is in his room and just types in the name of who he wants to see next, they're all done on timed appointments, not sure if it's a separate consul or his computer but it gets sent electronically to the sign in the waiting room where everyone is sitting and waiting. :)
Yep, the V.A. has them ....................... at least mine does.

Well, I haven't seen one ........ and I travel EXTENSIVELY by road. If not totally illegal I'd be willing to bet that you would be........ an object of interest........ to the police. Best to check with the D.M.V. of Penn. first.

Was thinking of getting one of those to promote a new business I am working on.
I suppose it could be dangerous on the highway, but I was thinking more in my daily commute which is bumper-to-bumper or at stop lights. Plus the one I looked at is large enough that you could probably see it from a safe distance.

People have placards and bumper stickers promoting their businesses on their vehicles, why not an interactive sign?

As long as it doesn't block my view in the rear window, it doesn't seem like a safety issue, especially since on my way to work the average speed is under 10 mph!

    Assembly-line doctors, huh?!
It would be if there were the doctors here, they've all retired or left so it's mainly locums on duty and trying to get an appointment is a nightmare.

I don't know about the laws your side of the pond but I would assume that it would be too much of a distraction to be safe so not allowed.

Illinois law is pretty clear about lights on cars. Only safety related or approved lights are permitted. On trucks, that includes all the amber lights to mark the periphery of the truck, back up light, brake lights, headlights, tail lights and DOT approved driving/fog lights.
I know they were busting folks with those LED emoticon panels in their rear window. I think some places even issue tickets for those fluorescent/LED lights that they put under cars.
I think they would consider a scrolling digital sign a distraction and possible hazard.

Agree, it would more like the dreaded "texting" as a distraction.......besides if they get too interested, they may slam into you

That's a drag, although I sense that Illinois is more of a tough ass state when it comes to law enforcement...

But I am not texting. I would just have a message displayed on the back of my vehicle.

People could get distracted reading a bumper sticker too, right?

And what about the fact that they have those same scrolling signs all over the roadways, including once put up by PennDOT!
