Cardboard Eclipser Brand Solar Eclipse Viewing Glasses, Are They Safe?

I bought a cheap $1 pair of Eclipser brand cardboard glasses at Walmart to view the upcoming solar eclipse in August. I don't plan on looking very long, but want to know if these are safe to use. I see no details on the outside of the package regarding ratings, etc.

My wife got 2 pairs from our optometrist a couple days ago for $2 each. I heard an ad on TV the other day for the same price, didn't catch the company name but think it was an observatory in Denver.

I guess if an optometrist is selling them to patients they must be safe to use.....or he just looking to drum up more business for himself in the future? :) Someone mentioned they never use anything cheap like that and it just made me think twice, figured the folks here would know better about such stuff.

Thanks for your reply Berton, much appreciated.

If you want to use something that's safe & not too costly, go to a welding supply store & get a replacement lens with a darkness of 14 or more. The cost is usually about $2 - $4 per lens.

I agree with Borg 386 . Your eyes are worth more than a dollar pair of cardboard glasses. I would also suggest takin quick glances and not staring for any length of time.

    See this site: https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/iso-certification

If they Do Not have the ISO for American standard or CE for Canadian standards logo Plus the ISO or CE standards Numbers printed on them I would not use them!

    What to Look For
How do you know if your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers are truly safe? You need to know that they meet the ISO 12312-2 (sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015) international safety standard. Filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant not only reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels but also block solar UV and IR radiation.

    Source from above link
I have both the viewing cards and glasses with the ISO 12312-2:2015 printed on them.

I bought several pairs of these also and although there isn't any info on the package itself, all of the info that you need along with the "Transmission Requirements" are on the inside of the glasses.
    They are compliant.

I was able to get some video around max time in my area but unfortunately I can't see it on my win7 machine, I can see it in the camera review, but not on my machine.

This is a first for this camera and my win7 machine. It even does it with older videos I've taken. I have to figure out why my network is so busy that windows media player (WLM) won't play the video, I can hear the talking done during the shoot but there's no video.

Next test...try the SD card in my 10box.

I saw that too once I opened the package and read the inside of the glasses. We were at 92% where I live, didn't get quite as dark outside as I thought it would, was darker some years back when we had smoke covering the sun from local wildfires. But, it was nice to see, glad I didn't travel further than my back yard though......much less traffic.
