Yes, there are Ameraucanas (which is what we have) and Araucanas (developed in Brazil). The reason for having them is that the eggs are lower in cholesterol than regular eggs.
If you cross Ameraucanas with another breed, the hens still lay colored eggs, but since they're no longer purebred, they're called Easter Eggers, or EEs.

Hey I was wondering, how come they haven't developed a chicken yet with 4 or 6 legs for those of us that love drumsticks. I would think KFC would have looked into that by now
