That had to be an expensive mistake!

The only thing I can compare it to is that we used 3HP routers spinning at 22,000RPM in the stair shop I worked. They spit out a lot of wood and one had better hold on to it while working it.
It would be if you couldn't hang on to it.

This is ironic. Getting back to TC's article. Same year.

1980: IBM introduces the first gigabyte hard drive. It is the size of a refrigerator, weighs about 550 pounds, and costs $40,000.

1980: Seagate releases the first 5.25-inch hard disk.
I think IBM might have made a drastic mistake in miniaturization.

Won't be long and spinners will be obsolete now that SSDs are coming way down in price.

Bought the 210 to use while MSI repairs my R9 380. Hopefully they don't take to long.

Oh so like holding on to a large gyroscope. Same with the router.

Thought they were the one's you were talking about. Hinged door flap on the front edge for the heads to go in over the platters. I had them when I worked on an IBM System 3 Mod 10. Early 80's. I unlocked the top cover on the drive to remove one, which is supposed to retract the heads and brake it down, before the lid would actually open. One time, the lid came open, so I reached in and grabbed that big handle and lifted it out. All 30lbs of drive was still spinning full speed! Was like holding on to a giant gyroscope!!!! All I could do to keep my balance...it was driving me around the damn room! Hit the wall with it and the plastic bottom half became detached, went flying about 5', and crashed on the floor! I was just holding the handle. So much for hermetically sealed! They were horribly expensive. Used Nigel's rule #2....duct taped the whole thing back together. Honest to God! Just let it sit there for a while.....staring at it. Finally got the nerve up to put it back in the drive. Closed the lid, locked it, and pressed start. Finally got a green light and all the data was fine. Ran forever......

    True story........

Wish I had a video of that and wow! Didn't even think you IT Pros broke a fingernail let alone that your lives were in jeopardy at times.

I can't imagine 14" of metal spinning at that high speed. Router bits were only about 1-1/2" in diameter.

How fast did those HDs spin?
